The Lord of the Rings trilogy’s January 2026 theatrical engagement has ended. Fathom Entertainment and Warner Bros. Pictures scheduled Peter Jackson’s extended editions across two weekends: January 16–18 and January 23–25, 2026. DBOX motion-enhanced screenings were listed for the first weekend at select theaters, but Fathom’s announcement also used the term “4DX” in a quote, creating an unresolved discrepancy.

Where to watch The Lord of the Rings trilogy: the January 2026 dates have passed

The special engagement was a past theatrical event, not an upcoming screening. Fathom’s announcement and Cinemark’s event page listed the films in sequence over both weekends; actual showtimes varied by venue. Fathom’s announcement and Cinemark’s event page provide the announced dates.

Date Film Motion-enhanced listing
Friday, January 16, 2026 The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition DBOX listed by Fathom
Saturday, January 17, 2026 The Two Towers Extended Edition DBOX listed by Fathom
Sunday, January 18, 2026 The Return of the King Extended Edition DBOX listed by Fathom
Friday, January 23, 2026 The Fellowship of the Ring Extended Edition Not identified in Fathom’s film-by-film listing
Saturday, January 24, 2026 The Two Towers Extended Edition Not identified in Fathom’s film-by-film listing
Sunday, January 25, 2026 The Return of the King Extended Edition Not identified in Fathom’s film-by-film listing

What the “4D twist” actually meant

Fathom’s announcement headline and schedule identify DBOX presentations at select theaters during the opening weekend. The release lists DBOX showings alongside each of the three films for January 16–18; it does not identify DBOX in its film-by-film schedule for January 23–25.

There is a wording conflict in the same announcement. Fathom CEO Ray Nutt said the films would be presented “in 4DX,” while the headline and schedule use DBOX. The release does not explain the difference. Its wording therefore does not establish that every screening was 4DX, or that DBOX and 4DX were interchangeable. Anyone trying to identify the format at a particular venue would have needed to check that theater’s listing.

Tickets, attendance and theater collectibles

In an announcement reported January 14, 2026, Fathom said the event had sold more than 400,000 tickets and generated more than $5 million in estimated domestic box office revenue to date. Fathom also said presales were more than 65% ahead of the franchise’s previous Fathom presales record; that comparison refers to Fathom’s own prior franchise record, not a general box-office benchmark. Celluloid Junkie’s January 14 report reproduces the distributor’s announcement.

Collectibles were tied to participating theaters and stock, rather than offered as a universal event item. Fathom said participating AMC locations had a map tin with quest magnets, while Regal and select independent theaters had a “One Ring” design. Availability and limits depended on the location and remaining inventory; the announcement does not establish that these items are still available.

The films’ connection to Tolkien’s books

Fathom describes the trilogy as based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s The Lord of the Rings and The Hobbit books. Readers interested in the source material can explore Tolkien’s novels alongside the films; no particular edition or current book-set availability was specified for this event.
