Spoilers for Seasons 1 and 2. The Salesman—called the Recruiter in Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide and played by Gong Yoo—was once a staff member inside the Squid Game organization. According to creator Hwang Dong-hyuk’s account of the character’s origin, he earned Oh Il-nam’s trust and was eventually assigned to recruit players outside the games. That explains his role, but it is not a complete biography of his life before the organization.
How did the Salesman become the Recruiter?
Hwang’s reported explanation is that the Salesman started as an employee within the organization. After gaining the trust of Oh Il-nam, the man behind the games, he was permitted to work “outside the game in the ‘real world’”—finding people to recruit. This account comes from Hwang’s 2021 interview with Chosun Ilbo, as reported by Koreaboo; it describes the origin of his job rather than a backstory fully dramatized onscreen. Koreaboo’s report
In Season 1, viewers meet him at a subway station, where he plays ddakji with Gi-hun before bringing him into contact with the game. Netflix’s Season 2 cast guide calls him the Recruiter, identifies Gong Yoo as the actor, describes him as a ddakji expert, and says he returns with a deeper storyline.
What do the red and blue tiles mean?
The color choice is not a code for whether someone will become a player or a staff member. Hwang’s explanation, as reported by Koreaboo, points instead to a Korean scary-story motif, also known in Japan: a bathroom spirit offers a choice between red and blue toilet paper. Hwang said, “I went with those colors because of the typical Korean scary story.” The quote explains the color inspiration; it does not establish a recruitment rule.

What remains unknown about his past?
The cited account does not say how the Salesman first joined the organization or describe his childhood, family, or life before working for it. Nor does it establish a canonical personal name: Netflix’s guide identifies him by his role, the Recruiter, and by Gong Yoo’s casting. Season 2 gives the character a deeper storyline, but the available account of his origin remains focused on how he came to recruit players.

No. They are separate characters. The Salesman is Gong Yoo’s Recruiter, who approaches potential players; the Front Man is a different figure in the organization. Netflix’s Season 2 retrospective discusses the Front Man’s backstory, which should not be mistaken for the Salesman’s.
