Spoiler-free review. “The Watcher,” the second episode of The Rookie Season 7, puts community policing, rookie training and Celina’s judgment back in the foreground. That focus makes the episode feel closer to the show’s early engine than a case built around outsized drama. It is a credible return to form—not proof that every viewer will consider the series back at its peak.

What happens in “The Watcher”?

Season 7, Episode 2 aired in the United States on January 14, 2025. Its official setup sends the team into community policing as they pursue a local vigilante. Alongside the case, Celina’s instincts are tested, while Tim and Lucy uncover secrets about the two new rookies. The episode was written by Natalie Callaghan and directed by Bill Roe. ABC’s episode listing supplies the case synopsis; Rotten Tomatoes’ episode page lists the credits and US TV-14 rating (language and violence).

This review stays with that premise rather than divulging unverified scene-by-scene turns or the vigilante’s identity.

Why it feels like an early-season episode

The episode’s strongest case for nostalgia is structural. Its hook is a street-level community-policing assignment, and the character material brings attention back to how rookies learn and how their training officers read them. Those ingredients are central to The Rookie’s original premise: the appeal lies not only in solving a case, but in watching inexperienced officers make choices under supervision.

That emphasis aligns with creator and showrunner Alexi Hawley’s description of Season 7. In a January 15, 2025 interview with TV Guide, he said the season would revisit hallmarks such as Plain Clothes Day, rookie roundups, post-work food-truck gatherings and a renewed focus on training. He described the three-rookie lineup and three training officers as a throwback to the show’s origins. “The Watcher” puts that stated direction into practice through its rookie and patrol threads, rather than relying on nostalgia as a label alone.

Does the episode earn the “glory days” comparison?

The training story gives the episode a clear center

Celina’s Plain Clothes Day is a useful test of the episode’s return-to-roots claim: it makes her judgment part of the drama, not just another detail in a larger crisis. The setup also gives the rookie storyline a natural place beside the case, while Tim and Lucy’s discovery about the new rookies ties the experienced officers back into the training dynamic. That combination feels recognizably The Rookie.

The case and character threads share the hour

The vigilante investigation offers a procedural spine, while the rookie material supplies the show’s interpersonal stakes. The balance is the point: community policing and training can coexist without either thread having to become a sprawling serialized event. For viewers who have missed the premise-driven ensemble, that is a meaningful shift in emphasis.

“Glory days” remains a judgment, not a settled verdict

The episode’s grounded ingredients support the comparison, but nostalgia alone cannot establish that it matches the strongest episodes from earlier seasons. The relevant test is whether the case, the rookie decisions and the ensemble interactions feel cohesive and entertaining on their own. Two critics listed on Rotten Tomatoes responded positively: Joshua M. Patton of CBR rated it 9/10, and Jasmine Blu of TV Fanatic rated it 4.1/5. Those are two individual reviews, not evidence of broad critical consensus.

So “return to the show’s glory days” works best as a qualified critical verdict. “The Watcher” returns attention to the show’s distinctive rookie-and-training-officer format; whether that makes it a high point depends on how much a viewer values that format over the series’ bigger, more serialized turns.

Where to watch or own Season 7 in the US

Viewing catalogs change by date and territory. At the time of its October 8, 2026 US check, JustWatch’s Season 7 guide listed Hulu streaming, digital purchase, and the complete Season 7 DVD set through Amazon DVD/Blu-ray. Rotten Tomatoes’ episode listing also lists Hulu and Disney+ for US streaming and Fandango for purchase. Check the service or retailer for current availability; the DVD listing is for the full season, not a disc devoted to this episode.

Runtime also depends on the listing: Apple TV’s US episode page gives “The Watcher” a 40-minute runtime and advisories for violence and language, while Prime Video’s Season 7 listing shows 43 minutes. Use the figure shown by the platform and edition you plan to watch rather than treating either as a universal running time. Apple TV US and Prime Video provide those platform-specific listings.
