A Hedda Hopper clipping cataloged by the Charlie Chaplin Archive names ten women as “Hollywood’s Ten Richest Women”; it gives neither comparable fortunes nor a valuation date or method. The list is useful evidence of period reputation, not a verified financial leaderboard.
Who appeared on the period list of Hollywood’s richest women?
The Charlie Chaplin Archive catalogs Hedda Hopper’s “Hollywood’s Ten Richest Women,” a list naming Irene Dunne, Marion Davies, Greta Garbo, Mary Pickford, Shirley Temple, Norma Shearer, Corinne Griffith, Norma Talmadge, Sonja Henie, and Paulette Goddard (Charlie Chaplin Archive). The record establishes that these women were grouped in a period list; it does not establish an exact order or explain whether “richest” meant salary, assets, investments, or estimated net worth.
The roster also spans careers from the silent-film era into later studio Hollywood. “Old Hollywood” is therefore a broad label here, not a single financial snapshot taken at one moment. To compare the actresses responsibly, it helps to separate contemporary reputation, career earnings, business ownership, and wealth estimated at death.
Why Mary Pickford stands out in the surviving evidence
Her acting pay rose sharply
The Mary Pickford Foundation’s chronology records her weekly salary rising from $500 in 1913 to $1,000 in 1914, $2,000 in 1915, and $10,000 in 1916 (Mary Pickford Foundation chronology). PBS American Experience independently records the $500-a-week contract in 1913 and describes Pickford negotiating successive increases (PBS American Experience: Mary Pickford). These are nominal amounts for the years stated, not modern-dollar conversions, and salary alone does not measure a person’s total wealth.

She had business interests beyond acting
Pickford co-founded United Artists in 1919, produced films through her own company, and retained an interest in the enterprise until the mid-1950s, according to the Foundation’s account (Mary Pickford Foundation: About Mary Pickford). That combination of star pay, production, and ownership makes her a particularly strong documented case of financial influence in early Hollywood. It does not, by itself, yield a comparable net-worth figure for every woman on Hopper’s list.
What published estimates say about Pickford and other stars
A 1979 Washington Post obituary reported that Pickford’s income in her best years was estimated at more than $1 million and that her worth in recent years had been estimated at $30 million to $50 million (The Washington Post, May 30, 1979). Those are estimates reported by the obituary, not an audited lifetime-earnings total or an independently established probate valuation.
Rank #2
A later Celebrity Net Worth retrospective gives estimated net worth at death of $32 million for Greta Garbo, $20 million for Mae West, and $40 million for Pickford (Celebrity Net Worth retrospective). These are secondary estimates, not comparable estate records. The figures come from different sources and dates, and they do not establish a consistent inflation-adjustment method. They cannot be combined into a reliable ranking, nor do they prove which actress was richest at any particular point in time.
Why estate value is not the same as a star’s legacy
The Mary Pickford Foundation says Pickford revised her will in 1971 to leave the bulk of her estate to a foundation. After the estate was probated in 1982, directors activated the existing Mary Pickford Foundation (Mary Pickford Foundation: About the Foundation). That account documents how she directed her legacy; it is not an independent valuation of her total wealth.

Financial records also capture only part of Pickford’s influence. Historian Kevin Brownlow, quoted by the Foundation, said: “Mary herself did an incredible amount for charity, the full extent of which will probably never be known.” The Foundation also reproduces a 1924 Photoplay remark by journalist Herbert Howe: “Mary Pickford the actress is completely overshadowed by Mary Pickford the individual.” These statements speak to her public and charitable legacy, not to a measurable ranking of fortunes.

- Documented: Hedda Hopper’s archive-cataloged list names ten women as among Hollywood’s richest, and Pickford’s salary history and business interests are described by the Mary Pickford Foundation.
- Reported, not verified as a comparative total: The Washington Post published estimates of Pickford’s income and worth in 1979; modern online net-worth figures are also estimates.
- Not established: A definitive order of the richest actresses, a consistent measure of wealth across their careers, or a comparable set of probate values for the women named.
So if “richest” means a well-documented combination of exceptional acting pay and ownership in Hollywood businesses, Pickford is the strongest example supported by these sources. If it means the single largest fortune among all actresses of Old Hollywood, the available figures do not support a confident winner.
