“The Squeeze” brings several investigations into collision with lively momentum, but its crowded web of names and connections can be hard to follow. As The Rookie season 6’s penultimate episode, it builds toward the finale while giving its own stories plenty to juggle—and not always enough room to breathe.
Spoilers for “The Squeeze” follow.
How the episode’s investigations fit together
Released May 14, 2024, “The Squeeze” is season 6, episode 9. Apple TV’s episode listing describes three central threads: Nolan and Celina take on a special case, Monica tries to identify the people who attacked her, and Lopez and Harper uncover a connection to a trail of crimes. The overlap gives the hour a sense of forward motion: each investigation adds another piece to a larger, increasingly tangled picture.
TV Guide’s episode description adds two details to that outline: Nolan and Celina find evidence in Maddogg’s apartment, while Chen takes an undercover babysitting assignment connected to Monica. Together, the cases and assignments create a busy ensemble hour. The pleasure is in watching separate threads begin to touch; the drawback is that the episode asks viewers to track a lot of people and links in quick succession.
Momentum comes at a cost to clarity
The episode’s pace is its most immediately entertaining quality. Rather than stay with one case until it is neatly resolved, it cuts among investigations, letting one development sharpen the stakes of another. That structure suits a penultimate installment: it keeps several pieces moving toward the season’s larger conflict.
#1 Best Overall
- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
But escalation is not the same as clarity. When new names and connections arrive faster than the episode can make them stick, the audience may spend more time sorting out the crime map than absorbing the tension. Jasmine Blu, writing for TV Fanatic in a review reproduced by Rotten Tomatoes on May 15, 2024, described the hour as “all gas and no brakes,” adding that the many names and moving pieces made it difficult to keep up. That is one critic’s response, not a consensus, but it captures the episode’s central trade-off.
The ensemble has plenty to do, but less space to settle
The intersecting cases make useful use of the show’s ensemble: Nolan and Celina’s assignment, Monica’s effort to identify her attackers, Chen’s related undercover work, and Lopez and Harper’s discovery all contribute to the episode’s forward push. At the same time, that breadth leaves less room for any one character beat to develop at length. The hour’s energy comes from accumulation, not from lingering with a single relationship or investigation.

That balance is especially noticeable in a series built around Nolan’s place in the LAPD. ABC’s official series description frames him as the department’s oldest rookie, bringing life experience and determination to policing. “The Squeeze” keeps him in the investigative mix, but its crowded structure makes the ensemble’s plot machinery more prominent than an extended look at his perspective.
Does it work as a penultimate episode?
Yes, in the limited sense that it raises anticipation for what comes next: episode 10 is titled “Escape Plan,” making “The Squeeze” the season’s penultimate installment. Its multiple investigations and accumulating connections give the finale a substantial set of threads to carry forward.

The trade-off is episode-level payoff. A penultimate chapter can build toward a finale and still give its own hour a satisfying shape; here, the drive toward the larger conflict sometimes outweighs the pleasure of seeing individual strands breathe. The result is an energetic setup that works better as a bridge than as a fully self-contained hour.
