Part One is now announced for May 6, 2027, and Part Two for May 25, 2028. The available reports confirm a release-schedule change, but do not give a reason for it.
What changed in the release schedule?
Variety reported on May 22, 2026, that both installments had been moved from their previously announced dates. Lionsgate’s production announcement the day before and a July 1, 2026, Fathom Entertainment article give the updated schedule.
| Installment | Previously announced date | Current announced date |
|---|---|---|
| The Resurrection of the Christ: Part One | March 26, 2027 | May 6, 2027 |
| The Resurrection of the Christ: Part Two | May 6, 2027 | May 25, 2028 |
Variety described Part One’s move as a postponement of a few months. Part Two’s new date is more than a year after its earlier date. Lionsgate associated the new dates with Ascension Day in 2027 and Ascension Day and the U.S. Memorial Day weekend in 2028. These are announced theatrical dates and could change again.
Why was the Passion sequel delayed?
The cited announcements and reporting do not explain why the release dates changed. The reports establish that the schedule moved; they do not attribute the move to a production problem or identify another cause.

Has filming finished?
Principal photography had concluded, according to Lionsgate’s May 21, 2026, announcement. The company said filming took 134 days and took place in Rome, Bari, Ginosa, Craco, Brindisi (Torre Guaceto) and Matera in Italy. That confirms the end of principal photography, not that the film’s post-production is complete.
What is the sequel about, and who is in it?
The two-part follow-up continues the story of the 2004 film and focuses on Jesus Christ’s resurrection, according to Fathom Entertainment. The production announcement lists Jaakko Ohtonen, Mariela Garriga, Pier Luigi Pasino, Kasia Smutniak, Riccardo Scamarcio and Rupert Everett. Fathom identifies Ohtonen as Jesus and Garriga as Mary Magdalene.

Where will the films be released?
Lionsgate says it will distribute the films in North America and the United Kingdom, while IDC handles Latin American distribution. The production announcement also names partners for some other territories: LEONINE in Germany, Metropolitan Film in France and Diamond in Spain. Icon Productions is set to release the films in Australia and New Zealand. Local release arrangements can vary, so territory-specific announcements are the best guide for dates outside the announced schedule above.
