“Please Come to Brazil” is a recurring invitation Brazilian fans post to celebrities, asking them to visit or perform in Brazil. Repeated across social media, the request became a recognizable catchphrase—and a meme that can be heartfelt, knowingly repetitive, or a target of parody.
What does “Please Come to Brazil” mean?
At face value, it is a fan asking a celebrity to visit Brazil. The phrase became a meme because people kept posting the same short request on celebrities’ profiles, photos, and videos. A particular celebrity’s name may be added, but the recurring invitation is the recognizable part. The Museu de Memes documents both the repeated format and its variations: Museu de Memes: “Please Come to Brazil”.
Context changes the tone. One person may genuinely hope an artist will tour Brazil; another may repeat the wording with a wink because it is familiar; someone else may be parodying the repetition. The phrase alone does not settle which meaning is intended.
Where did the meme come from?
Retrospective accounts often trace the phrase’s familiar form to a 2008 Twitter invitation to French entrepreneur Loïc Le Meur. Know Your Meme dates the post to April 11, 2008, and identifies the account as @cecilab; the Museu de Memes also describes the 2008 invitation. These sources present a commonly reported origin, not independently verified proof of the first-ever use: Know Your Meme: “Come to Brazil”.

Accounts of the meme’s spread point to 2009, after Justin Bieber joined Twitter and Brazilian fans repeatedly asked him to visit. The pattern—finding a celebrity’s social-media post and adding the same request—was noticed beyond Brazil, where it also became something people parodied. The phrase’s spread therefore depended less on a single post than on an easily repeated fan behavior.
Why can it sound sincere or ironic?
The invitation can express real enthusiasm, but its repetition makes it easy to quote self-consciously or mock. That distinction can also depend on who is using it and where. In a 2021 Gizmodo feature on Brazilian fandom and LGBTQ culture, writer Nicole Froio quoted Danniel Zui, creator of the Please Come to Brazil humor page: “Outside of Brazil, everyone uses it because they’re making fun of the Brazilians, but here, it’s mostly LGBTQ people who use it.” This is Zui’s characterization in a reported feature, not a measured description of every user or community. The phrase also moved beyond comment sections. Froio’s feature describes Alaska Thunderfuck’s 2017 “Come to Brazil” song and video as an ironic homage to Brazilian fans. It is one example of the catchphrase entering pop culture, not the origin of the meme.
What does “Please, don’t come to Brazil” mean?
The reversed phrase turns the invitation into a joke about concert overload. As Gshow explains, fans use it when the number of international shows makes it feel impossible to find the time and money to attend them all. It is a playful flip of “come to Brazil,” not a literal rejection of visiting artists. Gshow: “‘Come To Brazil’: entenda o meme usado por Bruno Mars para agradecer aos fãs brasileiros”.

How popular is the meme?
A TV Brasil profile reported that Danniel Zui’s Please Come to Brazil entertainment page had 600,000 followers in 2018. That is a historical count for one page, not a current total or a measure of how many people use the phrase across platforms. TV Brasil: “Viralizando traça panorama sobre memes brasileiros”.
The meme has also been examined academically: Aianne Amado Nunes Costa’s 2020 master’s dissertation at the Universidade Federal de Sergipe analyzes Brazilian fans as appreciators of international cultural objects. The existence of that study reflects scholarly interest; it does not provide a current count of the meme’s reach.
