The Real-Life Filming Locations in A Christmas Story

The real filming locations of A Christmas Story span Cleveland, Toronto, and St. Catharines—not fictional Hohman, Indiana. Here is what was filmed at Ralphie’s house, Higbee’s, Public Square, Victoria School, Cherry Street Bridge, and the Chop Suey Palace address, plus what visitors can see today.

A Christmas Story was filmed mainly in Cleveland, Ohio, and in Toronto and St. Catharines, Ontario—not in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana. Cleveland provided Ralphie Parker’s house, Higbee’s Department Store, Public Square, and much of the surrounding residential atmosphere. Southern Ontario supplied the school and flagpole sequence, the Cherry Street Bridge tire-change scene, the Christmas-dinner restaurant, and Toronto soundstage interiors.

The most accessible stop is the House from A Christmas Story in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. Other locations are public landmarks, changed businesses, former school property, or working infrastructure, so a filming address does not necessarily mean a visitor attraction.

Filming locations at a glance

A Christmas Story uses a fictional Indiana town, but its physical geography is mainly real-world Cleveland and southern Ontario.

Film location Real place What appears in the film What visitors should know
Parker family house 3159 W. 11th Street, Tremont, Cleveland, Ohio The exterior of Ralphie’s home and backyard material Now the House from A Christmas Story attraction and museum
Higbee’s Department Store Public Square, Cleveland The Christmas window, Santa visit, and department-store scenes Higbee’s closed in 2002; the building is now associated with the Cleveland casino complex
Public Square Downtown Cleveland The Christmas parade and other downtown Hohman material A genuine public urban landmark, although the 1983 surroundings have changed
Warren G. Harding School Victoria School, 173 Niagara Street, St. Catharines, Ontario The school exterior and Flick’s flagpole scene The former school is not automatically an operating attraction or publicly accessible site
Cherry Street Bridge Port Lands, Toronto Ralphie’s father changing the tire and the roadside fudge scene An active piece of changing city infrastructure, not a dedicated movie attraction
Bo Ling’s Chop Suey Palace 744 Gerrard Street East, Toronto The family’s Christmas dinner The address later housed Batifole; current occupancy and access must be checked
Parker-house interiors Toronto soundstage Many of the home interiors The Cleveland house interiors seen by visitors were reconstructed later

Cleveland: Ralphie’s house and downtown Hohman

3159 W. 11th Street: the Parker family house

The most recognizable location is the exterior of Ralphie Parker’s home at 3159 W. 11th Street in Cleveland’s Tremont neighborhood. In the movie, it is the Parker family’s house in the fictional town of Hohman, Indiana. The surrounding Tremont streets also helped create the working-class residential environment seen in the film.

The physical house dates to 1895. It was acquired by Brian Jones in 2004 and meticulously reconfigured after production so that its interior would resemble the sets used for the movie. The attraction opened to the public in November 2006. The property now presents rooms associated with the film, including the living room, the leg-lamp display, the kitchen, the boys’ bedroom, and the bathroom. A museum across the street contains production memorabilia, costumes, props, and behind-the-scenes material.

That distinction matters: the current attraction is an exceptionally detailed recreation, but the Cleveland house was used chiefly for exterior filming in 1983. The living room, kitchen, bedroom, and bathroom interiors visitors see today should not be described as the original 1983 filming interiors.

Higbee’s Department Store: the Red Ryder window and Santa

The downtown department store where Ralphie sees the Red Ryder BB gun in the Christmas window was the real Higbee’s Department Store on Cleveland’s Public Square. The store’s executives and employees assisted the production, and Higbee’s reportedly kept its holiday decorations in place for filming.

Interior department-store material, including Ralphie’s visit to Santa, was filmed inside the building. The store’s exterior and the square outside it also supplied the setting for the Christmas parade. Higbee’s was therefore not merely an inspiration or a nearby landmark: it was an actual production location.

Higbee’s closed in 2002. The building later became part of the casino complex associated with the Jack Cleveland Casino and the former Horseshoe Cleveland branding. The exterior remains part of the downtown streetscape, but visitors should not expect the former department-store interior to retain its 1983 appearance or to operate as a movie-site exhibit.

Public Square: the parade setting

Cleveland Public Square functioned as the outdoor downtown Hohman location. The Christmas parade sequence was filmed outside Higbee’s in the early morning, reportedly around 3:00 a.m. That makes Public Square a confirmed filming location in its own right, not simply a place to visit because it is near the old department store.

The square is still a public city landmark, but its landscaping, traffic patterns, businesses, and surrounding buildings may not look exactly as they did in the film. It is best approached as a location comparison: identify the relationship between the square and the former Higbee’s building, then use stills or a rewatch to match the composition rather than expecting a preserved film set.

Other Cleveland material

The Parker house supplied the backyard scenes, while the broader Tremont neighborhood contributed residential atmosphere and street material. Some location guides also identify Cleveland streets, alleys, school-route views, and nearby residential exteriors. Those minor identifications are less consistently documented than the house, Higbee’s, and Public Square, so they should be treated as leads rather than definitive stops unless supported by production documentation or a clear visual match.

Toronto and St. Catharines: school, bridge, restaurant, and studio work

Victoria School, St. Catharines: the flagpole scene

The schoolyard material associated with Ralphie’s school was filmed at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario. In the film, the building stands in for the fictional Warren G. Harding School. Most famously, it is the setting for the scene in which Flick’s tongue becomes stuck to the flagpole.

Later location reporting identifies the former school at 173 Niagara Street. The school subsequently closed and became a shelter rather than continuing as an ordinary operating school. That history makes the address important to the film’s production story, but it does not establish that the property is open for tours, casual entry, or photography. Treat it as a historic filming address and verify present-day ownership, use, and access before visiting.

Cherry Street Bridge, Toronto: the roadside fudge scene

The roadside sequence in which Ralphie helps his father change a tire was filmed at the Cherry Street Bridge in Toronto’s Port Lands. The southern end of the bridge is identified as the relevant setting. This is the scene that culminates in Ralphie saying the forbidden word and then facing the consequences.

The bridge and the surrounding Port Lands have undergone infrastructure changes, and Toronto municipal documentation confirms that the area continues to evolve. As a result, the current road alignment, bridge appearance, surrounding construction, and available viewpoints may differ from the 1983 images. It is a working urban location, not a controlled attraction: observe traffic restrictions and use only lawful, safe public viewpoints.

744 Gerrard Street East: Bo Ling’s Chop Suey Palace

The Parker family’s Christmas dinner at the fictional Bo Ling’s Chop Suey Palace was filmed at 744 Gerrard Street East in Toronto’s East Chinatown. The address later operated as Batifole, a French restaurant, which illustrates why a filming address and a film location’s current identity are not always the same thing.

Do not assume that the restaurant shown in the film still exists, that the current business welcomes movie-site visitors, or that the interior remains recognizable. Verify the current occupant and access policy independently before making this part of a Toronto itinerary.

Toronto soundstages: the Parker home interiors

The Cleveland house does not contain the original production interiors shown throughout the movie. Interior scenes were performed on a stage set, with Toronto identified as the location of the soundstage work. This is why the current Cleveland attraction can reproduce the home so convincingly without being the same interior in which the actors originally performed.

For location fans, the result is a useful division of labor: Cleveland supplied the real residential exterior and backyard, while Toronto supplied studio space for the controlled interior scenes, along with several important Ontario exteriors.

What is real, and what is fictional?

Hohman, Indiana, is fictional. Jean Shepherd drew on his Indiana upbringing for the stories behind the film, but the movie’s visible geography is largely Midwestern Ohio and southern Ontario rather than one continuous Indiana town.

The film even includes a small geographic joke: the fictional street name Cleveland Street nods to the Ohio city that supplied the production with its central house and downtown settings.

Shepherd’s literary connection is worth exploring separately from the travel itinerary. A key source volume is In God We Trust: All Others Pay Cash by Jean Shepherd, which gathers stories connected to the world and experiences that informed A Christmas Story. The book is not a map of the filming locations, but it helps explain why the film’s fictional Indiana setting feels so specific.

How to plan a real filming-location visit

A practical Cleveland route

  1. Begin in Tremont. Visit the House and Museum at 3159 W. 11th Street if the attraction is open and you have confirmed admission or tour details. This is the strongest dedicated A Christmas Story visitor experience.
  2. Continue downtown to Public Square. Compare the square with the parade scenes and locate the former Higbee’s building.
  3. Separate the attraction from the landmark. The house offers film-specific exhibits and reconstructed interiors. Public Square and the former Higbee’s site are ordinary urban locations whose present-day uses and views differ from the film.

This two-stop Cleveland plan covers the locations with the clearest documentation and the most dependable visitor relevance. It is more accurate than promising a complete tour of every residential street or alley that appears briefly on screen.

A separate Ontario itinerary

  1. Toronto: identify the Cherry Street Bridge setting in the Port Lands and the 744 Gerrard Street East address in East Chinatown, subject to current road conditions, business occupancy, and access.
  2. St. Catharines: treat 173 Niagara Street, the former Victoria School site, as a historical location rather than a guaranteed attraction.
  3. Allow for changed surroundings. The bridge infrastructure, the restaurant business, and the school’s use have changed since filming. Current photographs and maps should be checked shortly before travel.

Toronto and St. Catharines are not a single preserved movie park. They are working city locations connected by production history, and the most respectful visit is one that avoids trespassing, obstructing businesses, or treating a changing property as a set.

Why location lists often get this film wrong

  • They collapse the production into Cleveland. Cleveland supplied the Parker house, Higbee’s, Public Square, and surrounding residential material, but Ontario supplied the school and flagpole sequence, the bridge, the restaurant, and Toronto soundstage interiors.
  • They confuse reconstruction with original filming. The current Cleveland house is designed to match the movie, but its displayed interiors were recreated after the film was made.
  • They mistake an address for an attraction. The former Victoria School, Cherry Street Bridge, and 744 Gerrard Street East are meaningful locations, but none should automatically be presented as a tour stop with public admission.
  • They repeat minor-location guesses as fact. User-generated maps can be helpful for research, but the strongest consistently documented locations remain the Parker house, Higbee’s, Public Square, Victoria School, Cherry Street Bridge, 744 Gerrard Street East, and the Toronto soundstage work.

Current hours, ticket policies, restaurant occupancy, bridge configuration, property use, and building access can all change. Confirm those details from the relevant attraction, municipal, or business source before publication or travel.

Frequently Asked Questions

Was all of A Christmas Story filmed in Cleveland?

No. Cleveland supplied the Parker family house, Higbee’s Department Store, Public Square, and nearby residential material, but important school, bridge, restaurant, and soundstage scenes were filmed in Toronto and St. Catharines, Ontario.

Can you visit Ralphie’s house from A Christmas Story?

Yes, the property at 3159 W. 11th Street is operated as the House from A Christmas Story, with a museum and reconstructed movie interiors. Check the attraction’s current hours, closures, admission rules, and tour availability before visiting.

Is Hohman, Indiana, a real place?

No. Hohman, Indiana, is the fictional town in the film. The movie’s visual geography was created primarily in Cleveland and southern Ontario, while the stories drew on Jean Shepherd’s Indiana background.

Where was the Flick tongue-stuck-to-the-flagpole scene filmed?

The scene was filmed at Victoria School in St. Catharines, Ontario, historically identified at 173 Niagara Street. The former school later changed use, so the address should not be treated as a guaranteed public attraction.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: Cleveland supplied Ralphie’s house, Higbee’s Department Store, and Public Square; the Toronto region supplied the school and flagpole sequence, the tire-change bridge scene, the Christmas-dinner restaurant, and the soundstage interiors. Hohman is fictional, but the film’s most memorable places can be traced across real neighborhoods in Ohio and Ontario.
