That premise makes the film more than a conventional monster movie, but it is still very much an R-rated creature feature. Its fantasy imagery is paired with gore, strong violence, dark comedy, and an intentionally grotesque view of what wealthy people might do if they discovered a living source of miraculous medicine.

What is Death of a Unicorn about?
Elliot, played by Paul Rudd, and his daughter Ridley, played by Jenna Ortega, are traveling to a retreat connected to Elliot’s wealthy employer when their car strikes a unicorn. The animal does not remain an abstract symbol of purity or magic: its body becomes the focus of a scramble involving people who believe its properties could cure serious illnesses and generate enormous profits.

Richard E. Grant plays the billionaire at the center of that pursuit. His interest in the unicorn gives the movie its clearest source of social satire. The creature is not treated as a gift to be protected; it is assessed as an asset. Its blood, body, and biological possibilities become the raw material for a business and medical enterprise.
The setup deliberately places a familiar fantasy image inside a world of contracts, status, private wealth, and scientific commercialization. The central question is not simply whether unicorns exist. It is what humans—particularly powerful humans—would do if a unicorn could be turned into a lucrative treatment.
Fantasy wonder becomes corporate extraction
The film’s strongest idea is the collision between innocence and commodification. A unicorn traditionally represents beauty, rarity, and moral purity. Here, those qualities make it valuable in the most literal sense. The people surrounding it are less interested in understanding the creature than in controlling access to whatever it can provide.
That gives Death of a Unicorn an “eat-the-rich” foundation and a clear big-pharma satire. The movie imagines miraculous healing not as a public good but as a product whose ownership could be restricted, priced, and exploited. Its targets include extreme wealth, inherited privilege, the language of innovation, and the tendency to treat living things as inventories of useful components.
The satire is broad by design. Rather than presenting a carefully detailed critique of the pharmaceutical industry, the film uses an absurd fantasy scenario to make exploitation visible and ridiculous. That approach produces some of its funniest moments, but it also contributes to the main criticism of the movie: the ideas can feel more obvious than fully developed.

An R-rated creature feature—not a family unicorn movie
The title and premise may suggest a whimsical fantasy adventure, but the rating is an important part of the film’s identity. Death of a Unicorn contains gore, gruesome deaths, strong violence, language, and some drug use. Its unicorn mythology is surrounded by splatter and bodily horror rather than family-friendly wonder.
In tone, the movie sits between dark fantasy, comedy, horror, and the old-fashioned creature feature. The monster-movie element is not merely decorative: the unicorn becomes a dangerous force, and the film embraces the visual shock of placing a beautiful mythical animal alongside bloody consequences. Reviews have connected its gruesome social commentary to the tradition of creature movies from the 1970s and 1980s.
That mixture will determine whether the film works for a viewer. Anyone looking for a gentle fantasy story about a magical animal should look elsewhere. Viewers who enjoy grotesque genre comedy, satirical horror, and films that turn familiar imagery inside out are more likely to appreciate its intentions.

Paul Rudd and Jenna Ortega provide the film’s emotional and comic center. Their father-daughter pairing gives the increasingly chaotic story a human relationship to follow, while their contrasting screen personas help the movie move between awkward comedy and darker material.
Rudd is well suited to a character caught between ordinary family responsibility and an absurd crisis involving the wealthy people around him. Ortega brings a sharper, more skeptical presence to the daughter role, and her performance has been one of the elements most consistently singled out in coverage of the film.

Richard E. Grant embodies the billionaire’s theatrical confidence and entitlement. Will Poulter and Téa Leoni round out an ensemble that supplies much of the movie’s energy. Even critics who found the screenplay uneven generally recognized the appeal of watching a recognizable group of comedic and dramatic performers commit to the film’s grotesque premise.
Critical reception: an intriguing premise with an uneven payoff
The critical response has been mixed. At the time of the research capture, Rotten Tomatoes listed the film at 52% from critics and 76% from audiences. Those figures can change as reviews are added or corrected, so they should be checked again before publication or used as a permanent assessment.
The positive case is straightforward: the film has an unusual premise, a committed cast, energetic gore, and a willingness to push its fantasy idea into unpleasant territory. Roger Ebert’s review praised the ensemble and the way the gruesome monster-movie framework carries the social commentary.
The reservations are also clear. Some reviewers found the satire too broad, the escalation too slow, or the story less inventive than its premise suggests. The Guardian’s review treated the movie as an uneven big-pharma satire while still acknowledging Jenna Ortega’s presence. In other words, the film is not best described as either a critical disaster or an unqualified success. Its cast and concept make a strong first impression, but the execution does not persuade every viewer equally.

The original score is credited to Dan Romer and Giosuè Greco. Apple Music lists a 17-track album with a total runtime of approximately 52 minutes, released on March 27, 2025. For viewers who respond to the film’s darkly playful atmosphere, the Death of a Unicorn soundtrack is a more relevant collectible than generic fantasy merchandise.
A24 has also listed a physical version of the soundtrack and a dedicated Death of a Unicorn collection that includes the Blu-ray, soundtrack, and a Blood Lamp collectible. The soundtrack was reported sold out when checked, however, so availability should be confirmed rather than assumed. Who should watch it?
- Watch it if you enjoy: R-rated fantasy, splattery creature features, dark comedy, ensemble casts, and satire aimed at wealth and corporate power.
- Approach with caution if you want: a tightly developed social critique, a conventional family adventure, or a film whose premise is explored with consistent pacing.
- Skip it if you dislike: gore, strong violence, broad satire, or stories that turn a cute or magical creature into a source of horror.
Final assessment
Death of a Unicorn works best as an R-rated A24 creature satire rather than as a traditional fantasy film. Its most effective joke is also its central argument: even a unicorn would not be safe from people who see every rare natural wonder as a commercial opportunity. Paul Rudd, Jenna Ortega, and the supporting cast give the movie considerable energy, while the gore keeps its critique from becoming a purely verbal exercise.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesThe result is deliberately strange and often entertaining, though its broad satire and uneven pacing limit its impact. It is a good choice for viewers who want an unusual horror-comedy with an anti-wealth premise—and a poor choice for anyone expecting a family-friendly unicorn story.
