Netflix describes a heist involving six outlaws and a washed-up Witcher; GamesRadar reports that the 80-minute film connects to events around The Witcher season 4. For the spoiler-conscious viewing order, GamesRadar recommends watching season 4 first.
What is The Rats: A Witcher Tale about?
Netflix’s official synopsis centers on six misfit outlaws attempting a daring heist. To pull it off, they must learn to trust one another—and a washed-up Witcher. Netflix categorizes the title as fantasy, action and book-based. The listing does not identify which particular Witcher book, if any, supplies the film’s story.
Although the premise places it within the Witcher franchise, it is presented as a heist story rather than a documentary. Netflix lists the title as a 2025 fantasy release.
How does it connect to The Witcher season 4?
GamesRadar reported on October 30, 2025, that the film serves as a prequel to season 4 while also briefly addressing what happens next for Ciri. Its advice to watch season 4 first is specifically spoiler guidance: the film reportedly touches on a season-finale development. That is an independent outlet’s recommended viewing order, not an order stated by Netflix.
Choose a viewing route
- Watching just the film: You can approach it as a Witcher-universe heist story, but the reported season 4 connection may make some context less familiar.
- Avoiding spoilers: Watch season 4 before the film, following GamesRadar’s recommendation.
- Exploring the books: The Last Wish is identified by its publisher as the first Witcher book and as part of the series that inspired Netflix’s show. It is optional franchise background, not a confirmed direct source or scene-by-scene counterpart for this film.
Who is in the cast?
Netflix’s listing names Christelle Elwin, Ben Radcliffe, Fabian McCallum, Aggy K. Adams, Connor Crawford, Juliette Alexandra, Dolph Lundgren, Ben Robson, Sharlto Copley and Freya Allan. The listing does not pair these actors with character names or roles, so those assignments cannot be confirmed from the official page.
How long is the film, and what is on Netflix’s listing?
GamesRadar reports a runtime of 80 minutes. Netflix’s listing separately includes a teaser lasting 1 minute 2 seconds; that is the teaser length, not the film’s runtime. The listing also says offline downloads are available, subject to Netflix’s catalog and the viewer’s account.
Where can you watch The Rats: A Witcher Tale?
Netflix has an official title listing for the film, and PC Gamer reported on December 23, 2025, that it had appeared on Netflix in October 2025. Availability can depend on the viewer’s region and account, so check Netflix’s catalog where you watch. Netflix’s 2025 listing identifies the title, but does not establish that it is available in every country.

Netflix labels the film as based on books, but its listing does not name a source book. Publisher information describes The Last Wish as the first Witcher book and says the Witcher book series inspired the Netflix show. That makes the collection relevant background for readers curious about the wider franchise; it does not confirm that The Last Wish is the film’s source text.
