The record shows a criticized on-air response, a shift in casting policy and public statements about improving representation. It does not establish a current plan for Apu or prove that the wider problem has been resolved.
Why Apu became a larger question than one voice role
Hari Kondabolu’s 2017 documentary The Problem with Apu brought renewed attention to the cultural effects of the character and to criticism of his portrayal. The dispute was not only about who performed Apu’s voice. It also asked what repeated comic portrayals of South Asians communicate, and what responsibility a prominent television show has when viewers say a character reinforces a racial stereotype. ABC News, 14 April 2021; Associated Press.
That distinction matters when assessing the response. An actor can take responsibility for a performance; a series makes decisions about casting, writing and whether a character appears at all. One change does not automatically settle the others.
What The Simpsons did—and did not establish
The 2018 episode response drew criticism
In April 2018, the series addressed the debate in “No Good Read Goes Unpunished.” Contemporary coverage described the segment as dismissive of the criticism. Kondabolu said it repeated arguments he had already addressed in his documentary. Los Angeles Times, 19 July 2018.

That episode is evidence that the show responded on screen, not evidence that the response persuaded critics or resolved their concerns. In July 2018, creator Matt Groening said the show was unsure how it would handle Apu. He also defended the role of stereotypes in cartooning, while saying creators should try not to make reprehensible stereotypes. Those were his comments at the time, not a confirmed plan for the character. Los Angeles Times.
Azaria left the role, but that did not mean Apu was ending
In January 2020, Azaria said he would no longer voice Apu. The Associated Press reported that Fox and the producers had not then confirmed either Azaria’s exit or that the character was ending. Azaria suggested that an Indian actor could take over the role as one possible path. That report describes what was known at the time; it does not establish Apu’s current status. Associated Press.

The series announced a broader casting-policy change
By April 2021, the series had announced that white actors would no longer voice non-white characters. The policy addressed casting beyond Apu, but the available reporting does not document a specific subsequent decision about Apu himself. ABC News.
What Azaria’s apology acknowledges
In 2021, Azaria apologized for participating in the creation of Apu. He said he sometimes apologized personally and recognized that good intentions did not erase negative consequences. As ABC News reported his statement: “Just because there were good intentions doesn’t mean there weren’t real negative consequences for the thing that I am accountable for.” ABC News, 14 April 2021.

Azaria also supported people of color voicing characters of color and called for more diverse writers’ rooms. In 2023, reflecting on the documentary’s impact in a public conversation with Kondabolu, he said his work on Apu had helped create a “marginalising, dehumanising stereotype.” The Independent, 26 April 2023.
These statements show a change in Azaria’s understanding and a willingness to accept personal accountability. They are not, by themselves, evidence that the series changed how it writes South Asian characters or that viewers’ concerns have been addressed.

What a meaningful fix would need to show
The documented changes point toward a direction—more inclusive casting and writing—but do not establish a complete remedy. A useful way to judge any future response is to look for sustained changes in who makes decisions and how the character is portrayed, rather than treating an apology or a single episode as conclusive.
- Decision-making: Are South Asian and other people of color involved in the writers’ room and in choices about the character?
- Access to roles: Does casting give South Asian performers opportunities to voice South Asian characters?
- Characterization: Does Apu have agency and specific qualities beyond an accent or accent-based jokes?
- Listening: Is feedback from affected viewers reflected in creative decisions, rather than merely answered in dialogue?
- Follow-through: Are changes sustained across the series, instead of being limited to a policy announcement or one storyline?
These are standards for evaluating a response, not claims that the show has met them. The reporting cited here does not verify a later Apu storyline, a recasting, or an assessment of the series’ progress.

What can be concluded now
The record supports a measured conclusion: Azaria’s apology and exit from the role were meaningful personal acknowledgments, and the announced casting policy was a broader institutional change. But the show’s 2018 response was criticized, and the available reporting does not confirm what happened next with Apu or demonstrate that the underlying representational concern has been resolved. Whether The Simpsons has fixed itself depends on creative choices and sustained outcomes that these reports do not establish.
