Tim Burton said the casting looked back to Charles Addams’ drawings, while the show’s co-creators said Catherine Zeta-Jones and Luis Guzmán gave Wednesday parents whose strong, contrasting presence helps explain why she wants to step out of their shadow. That is the creative rationale the team has shared publicly—not evidence of one private or exclusive deciding factor.
Burton wanted to return to Charles Addams’ drawings
When discussing the casting of Zeta-Jones as Morticia and Guzmán as Gomez, director and executive producer Tim Burton said the team was eager to hark back to the original Addams Family creator’s drawings. He also described the pairing as “a beautifully mismatched couple who are in love.” (Netflix’s interview with the Wednesday creative team)
The explanation points to a combination of visual reference and character dynamic: the actors’ pairing evokes the spirit of Addams’ illustrations, but also makes the couple’s affection and difference legible on screen. Burton did not say that resemblance to a particular drawing, or any single trait, was the sole reason Zeta-Jones was selected.
The casting helps make Wednesday’s conflict visible
Co-showrunners Alfred Gough and Miles Millar tied the parents’ presence directly to Wednesday’s point of view. They said Morticia has the kind of movie-star presence associated with Zeta-Jones, while Gomez has the outsized personality Guzmán brings to the role. Together, they make Wednesday’s dilemma understandable: how does she establish herself when both parents cast such large shadows? (Gough and Millar’s comments on the casting)

That story function matters as much as glamour or family resemblance. Morticia and Gomez are not simply background relatives; their distinctive identities help define the pressure Wednesday feels to become her own person.
Morticia arrives with a formidable Nevermore legacy
Netflix’s character interview describes Morticia as a former fencing-team captain, Dark Prom queen and president of the séance society at Nevermore. Her past gives Wednesday a tangible legacy at school, alongside the formidable impression her mother makes as an adult. (Netflix’s interview about Morticia and Nevermore)

This background supports the showrunners’ account of Wednesday’s predicament: she is trying to make a name for herself in a world where her mother already has a reputation.
Zeta-Jones’s performance approach is a separate part of the story
After being cast, Zeta-Jones said she did not want to play Morticia as a “Halloween-costumed, animated caricature.” Instead, she emphasized Morticia as a mother deeply in love with her husband. (Zeta-Jones on playing Morticia)

That comment explains her interpretation of the role, not the casting team’s decision. The distinction is useful: Burton and the showrunners have described why the pairing fit the series, while Zeta-Jones has described how she approached the character once she had the part.
Her friendship with Guzmán was not given as the reason
Zeta-Jones and Guzmán had worked together on Traffic and became friends. The Netflix interview says they discussed how to approach Morticia and Gomez before filming, but it does not identify their prior relationship as the reason either actor was cast. (Netflix’s interview with the cast)

Likewise, Netflix’s broader descriptions of Wednesday emphasize its outsider themes and Burton’s visual storytelling, but that context does not establish a specific casting motive. (Netflix behind-the-scenes feature; Netflix series announcement)

The clearest answer combines three points the creative team has stated: Burton wanted to look back to Addams’ drawings; he valued the loving contrast between Zeta-Jones and Guzmán as a couple; and Gough and Millar saw their commanding personalities as a way to dramatize Wednesday’s struggle to emerge from her parents’ shadow.

Those comments offer a public creative rationale, not access to private casting deliberations. The cited sources do not establish that Zeta-Jones was Burton’s only choice, that she was selected solely for her celebrity, or that her friendship with Guzmán determined the decision.
