Spoilers ahead for the finale of Netflix’s The Perfect Couple. The six-episode adaptation turns a Nantucket wedding weekend into a murder mystery, but its most revealing moment is not a clue: it is the late disclosure that changes how Nicole Kidman’s Greer Winbury reads. That scene makes the series worth watching for viewers who enjoy glossy ensemble mysteries where family secrets matter as much as the solution.
Is The Perfect Couple worth watching?
Yes, if you want a polished, beachside whodunit built around a crowded family, tangled loyalties, and a central performance that shifts meaning near the end. The series has the pleasures of an ensemble mystery—suspects with private stakes, a carefully composed setting, and a final explanation—without making every character equally compelling. Its strongest reason to stick with it is the way the finale unsettles the poised image Kidman has maintained as Greer.
Netflix’s official premise begins with Amelia Sacks marrying Benji Winbury on Nantucket. A body is found during the wedding weekend, and the gathered guests become suspects as secrets surface. The six-episode drama is directed by Susanne Bier, with Jenna Lamia as showrunner; Elin Hilderbrand, author of the source novel, is also an executive producer. Netflix Media Center lists the cast and creative credits, while Netflix’s title page provides the series listing and episode synopses. Availability and catalog details may vary by location and date.
What is the crucial Nicole Kidman scene?
The finale’s disclosure changes Greer’s mask
Greer is not simply the immaculate, formidable mother of the groom. She is a successful mystery novelist, and her command of image and information makes her seem practiced at keeping other people—and the audience—at a distance. Kidman described her as “a mother bear” in a Netflix Tudum cast guide, a phrase that captures the protective instinct beneath Greer’s polished surface. Netflix Tudum’s cast guide also frames Greer as acerbic, mysterious, formidable, and hopeful.

The crucial scene, in my view, is the finale’s disclosure about Greer’s past. It does not merely add a secret to the family’s pile; it changes the context for the composure Kidman has been playing. A posture that first feels like pure control becomes more complicated, with vulnerability and defiance coming into view. The shift is effective because it asks the viewer to reconsider Greer rather than simply admire a late twist. The Atlantic’s September 2024 criticism likewise reads the disclosure as making Greer newly unexpected and uncompromising, though that is one critic’s interpretation, not a universal verdict. The Atlantic’s review discusses that performance and turn.
The London Zoo scene leaves a different door open
There is also a separate late scene between Greer and Amelia at the London Zoo. Greer invites Amelia to read a manuscript and suggests dinner. It is a quieter, more tentative kind of payoff: an offer of possible connection after the weekend’s damage, not confirmation that the two women will build a lasting relationship. Director Susanne Bier defended keeping the moment, saying, “There were so many [people] wanting to get rid of that scene, and I was like, ‘No, no, no!’ It’s so satisfying to see them meet, and maybe that is a story that can come out of that meeting.” Showrunner Lamia and Bier think Amelia accepts; Eve Hewson says, “No.” The disagreement is part of the scene’s open-ended charm, not evidence of a settled future. Netflix Tudum’s finale explanation reports the differing interpretations.

Does the murder mystery pay off?
Spoiler: Abby Stokes Winbury killed Merritt. Netflix Tudum identifies Abby, played by Dakota Fanning, as the killer. Merritt, played by Meghann Fahy, is Amelia’s best friend and maid of honor; her affair with Tag and pregnancy place the murder inside the Winbury family’s intimate and financial tensions. The show’s stated motive is that Merritt’s pregnancy with Tag’s child would alter the inheritance division and delay distribution, while Abby and Thomas were under financial pressure. This is the series’ account of the family’s motive, not a statement about real inheritance law. TIME’s September 6, 2024 explainer also describes Merritt’s affair and pregnancy. Tudum’s ending explainer and TIME’s spoiler explainer give the relevant details.
The solution gives the weekend’s secrets a clear causal center, which is more satisfying than a twist that exists only to surprise. The mystery’s appeal, though, lies less in a perfectly even contest among suspects than in watching wealth and intimacy distort what people are willing to conceal. The show makes the answer legible through motive and relationships; viewers looking for an intricate puzzle in which every suspect receives equal investigative weight may find the character drama more prominent than the mechanics.

Do the suspects and tone hold together?
The ensemble gives the central family conflict different faces: Liev Schreiber’s Tag is at the center of the affair, Dakota Fanning’s Abby and Thomas face financial pressure, and Amelia is caught between her friendship with Merritt and her impending marriage into the Winbury world. Billy Howle plays Benji, while Eve Hewson’s Amelia supplies an outsider’s perspective on a family whose rituals and resources can make its secrets feel protected. Netflix’s official cast listing identifies these roles. Netflix Media Center’s series page lists the cast and credits.
The tone is deliberately sleek and heightened, with the Nantucket wedding setting giving the family’s private mess an almost theatrical frame. That style suits the story’s interest in appearances, especially Greer’s. It can also keep emotional intensity at arm’s length. The finale’s most affecting turn works because it briefly breaks through that distance; the London Zoo encounter then lets the series end on possibility rather than another piece of case-solving.
