The series follows a version known as Oz Cobb and reshapes his family history and path to power; DC describes the show and Tom King’s comic as independent origin stories, not a continuity-wide replacement.
What is new about Oz Cobb’s origin?
The 2024 series continues the version of the Penguin introduced in The Batman. In this screen continuity, he is known as Oz Cobb rather than Oswald Cobblepot, and his rise is rooted in his family relationships and Gotham’s criminal world—not in the familiar image of a wealthy Cobblepot heir.
A comparison of the series’ premiere with earlier comic portrayals notes that Oz recalls his brothers with apparent affection and is close to his mother. That contrasts with comics such as Penguin: Pain and Prejudice, which depict Oswald as bullied by his older brothers before he murders them. These are differences between particular versions, not a new rule for every Penguin story. (DCComicBooks.com’s premiere-based comparison.)
Family, appearance, and ambition
The same comparison observes that the show makes Oz’s physical appearance less central to his motives than some comic and film versions do. His limp is explained by a foot malformation. The series instead foregrounds ambition, manipulation, and the accumulation of power as drivers of his criminal ascent. Those points describe this adaptation’s characterization; they should not be treated as a universal explanation of the Penguin.

There has never been just one Penguin origin
The Penguin debuted in Detective Comics #58 in 1941, but DC’s own history records multiple later treatments rather than one biography that every story follows.
- 1981, The Best of DC #10: DC identifies this as the first exploration of the character’s origin. In that account, his mother’s caution after his father died of pneumonia helped shape his umbrella habit, while the family bird shop helped explain his affinity for birds.
- 1989, Secret Origins Special #1: This story offered a different explanation for the nickname: a child named Sharkey first called him “Penguin.”
- Penguin: Pain and Prejudice: This later story emphasized his older brothers’ bullying and his eventual murder of them.
DC also traces a change in the character’s criminal role: from bird-themed umbrella crimes and high-society cons toward corporate crime and Gotham mob power. Penguin Triumphant (1992) presented him as a corporate criminal, and the Iceberg Lounge debuted in Detective Comics #683 (1995). The grounded crime-boss Oz fits into that broader history of reinvention without making the earlier versions disappear. (DC’s umbrella history; DC’s Penguin facts.)

Does the series rewrite DC canon?
No—not across the comics as a whole. The television series belongs to Reeves’s Batman setting, while comics have their own continuities and repeated reinterpretations. The clearest guardrail comes from the interviewer in DC.com’s February 25, 2025 conversation with writer Tom King: “We’ve now had two entirely independent stories chronicling the Penguin’s origin as a Gotham City crime boss.” The question refers to the live-action series and King’s comic, not to a single origin that supersedes the rest of DC’s history. (DC.com interview.)
King also discusses how the character can turn apparent vulnerabilities into weapons. That is the comic writer’s interpretation in the context of his series, not a universal canon rule. His completed The Penguin comic runs for twelve issues and offers a separate account of the character’s rise.

How to compare the versions
Rather than asking which origin is definitive, compare what each version emphasizes. The Reeves television universe makes Oz’s family ties and criminal ascent central; particular comics supply different family histories, nickname explanations, and criminal identities. A useful comparison keeps each story’s setting and claims distinct:
- Family and class: Does the story present him as connected to a wealthy Cobblepot lineage, or as a crime boss whose rise is built in Gotham?
- Mother and brothers: Is his mother a close influence? Are his brothers remembered fondly, or do they bully him?
- Nickname and physical traits: Which explanation for “Penguin” does that story use, and what role do his appearance or limp play?
- Criminal identity: Is he a bird-and-umbrella-themed rogue, a society operator, a corporate criminal, or a mob power broker?
- Continuity: Is the story part of Reeves’s screen setting, a particular comic run, or another adaptation? Similar names do not make their biographies one continuous account.
For a direct comics comparison, DC’s completed Tom King series is one option; Penguin: Pain and Prejudice provides a contrasting family history. Both are distinct stories, not keys that settle every version of the character.
