The comics have revised and expanded his past over decades, while television and film adaptations give him distinct childhoods, names and routes to power. In The Penguin (2024), Colin Farrell plays Oz Cobb, a gangster whose climb through Gotham’s criminal world—not a definitive retelling of every comic origin—is the central story.
Who is the Penguin?
The Penguin is a Batman antagonist whose defining traits—bird imagery, umbrellas, an air of respectability and criminal ambition—have been reshaped across comics and screen adaptations. DC says his umbrella gimmick debuted in Detective Comics #58 in 1941. His name, Oswald Cobblepot, appeared in a 1946 Batman newspaper strip; the name carried over to comics soon after. Those publication details do not establish one unchanging biography.

The name used in Matt Reeves’ film continuity is different: DC identifies the character as Oz Cobb. The 2024 series The Penguin follows the story begun in The Batman, with Farrell starring and Lauren LeFranc as showrunner. DC describes it as an eight-episode crime-and-gangster drama.
How did the Penguin’s comic-book origin develop?
Rather than arriving as a complete origin, the comics built the character’s history in stages. DC says his origin was explored in The Best of DC #10 (1981). That account connected his umbrella habit to an overprotective mother after his father died of pneumonia, and his attachment to birds to a family bird shop. Childhood cruelty also helped explain the Penguin nickname.

A later account gave the nickname a more specific source: DC’s history says Secret Origins Special #1 (1989) identifies a child nicknamed Sharkey as the first to call Oswald “Penguin.” These details belong to particular comic treatments; they should not be assumed to apply to every adaptation.
Penguin: Pain and Prejudice takes the family history in a darker direction, depicting Oswald’s older brothers bullying him and his murdering them. It is one comics version, not a backstory shared by all Penguins.

From bird-themed rogue to crime boss
The character’s role changed as well as his backstory. Early stories emphasized bird-themed crimes and umbrella tricks. Later comics made him a high-society conman, corporate criminal, club owner and intermediary between costumed villains and organized crime. DC dates the Iceberg Lounge’s comics debut to Detective Comics #683 (1995).
DC’s retrospective identifies John Ostrander and Joe Staton’s 1992 graphic novel Penguin Triumphant as a point where the shift from colorful rogue toward a more grounded mobster could be seen. For a darker family-focused comic story, Penguin: Pain and Prejudice is a relevant place to start.
How do the major screen versions differ?
Screen adaptations do not share a single childhood or starting position. These are distinct continuities, not chapters in one continuous biography.
| Version | Starting point and defining change | Continuity |
|---|---|---|
| Burgess Meredith | A gentleman criminal, helping establish a formal, comic crime boss. | 1960s Batman television series |
| Danny DeVito | Abandoned by his parents as an infant; grows into an angry, physically grotesque criminal leading violent circus performers. His mayoral campaign is specific to this film. | Batman Returns (1992) |
| Robin Lord Taylor | Starts as Fish Mooney’s low-ranking umbrella boy and rises to become Gotham’s underworld kingpin. | Gotham television series |
| Colin Farrell | Oz Cobb begins with East End origins and seeks criminal power in Gotham. | Matt Reeves’ The Batman continuity and The Penguin (2024) |
DC’s accounts of these adaptations underline why details should not be blended: DeVito’s abandoned-child story is not the comics’ universal origin, and Taylor’s ascent is not a retelling of Farrell’s.

What is Oz Cobb’s origin in The Penguin?
The series makes Oz’s rise the main subject. DC’s official series page describes The Penguin as a continuation of the Reeves The Batman saga, centering on Farrell’s Oz Cobb. DC editorial writer Alex Jaffe describes the character as having humble East End origins, in contrast to the wealthy-stock position commonly associated with the Cobblepot archetype. His path is presented as a movement from town-car driver toward power in Gotham’s criminal world.
Jaffe interprets the changed surname and lower-class background as a deliberate way to make the familiar character less familiar: Oz has farther to climb to reach Gotham’s elite. Jaffe also reads his central motive as a need to be taken seriously after being dismissed as a joke. That is DC contributor Alex Jaffe’s interpretation, not a direct statement attributed to Reeves or LeFranc.

Is The Penguin based on a comic?
It is more accurate to call the series inspired by comics than to call it a direct adaptation of one origin story. DC reports that LeFranc cited The Long Halloween, Dark Victory and Penguin: Pain and Prejudice as inspirations. Those works inform the character and themes, but the series tells its own story in the Reeves continuity.
In a 2025 DC interview, comic writer Tom King described his comic and the television series as independent origin stories. That distinction matters: shared inspiration does not mean the series’ events or Oz’s biography match those of any one comic.
What Penguin comic should you read next?
For a family backstory that is darker than some other versions, read Penguin: Pain and Prejudice. For a separate crime-boss story, The Penguin Vol. 1: The Prodigal Bird follows a retired Oswald forced back into Gotham. Penguin Random House Library Marketing lists that collected edition as a 200-page book on sale June 25, 2024. It is a parallel comic story, not the origin of the television series.
