The Penguin makes Sofia Falcone more than a rival in Gotham’s criminal underworld: it turns her into a character whose path to villainy is shaped by how others see and treat her. That transformation—rather than a claim that every viewer agrees she is 2024’s “most fascinating” Batman villain—is what makes her story worth examining. The series substantially reworks Sofia’s comics counterpart, and its fourth episode gives that change room to breathe.
Who is Sofia Falcone in The Penguin?
Sofia Falcone, played by Cristin Milioti, belongs to the Falcone family and Gotham’s criminal underworld in The Penguin. The eight-episode DC Studios series continues the crime saga begun by Matt Reeves’ The Batman; it is part of that specific Batman continuity, not a version intended to make every Batman adaptation share one canon. DC’s series page describes the series as a continuation of the film’s story, and Warner Bros. Discovery’s pressroom identifies Milioti as Sofia Falcone.
That setting matters to her characterization. Sofia is not introduced simply as a familiar comic-book name transplanted unchanged to television. The series develops her as a force within the Falcone family’s world, while making her past and transformation central to how the audience understands her present.
Which episode tells Sofia’s backstory?
“Cent’anni” reframes the character
Episode four, “Cent’anni,” is the series’ focused account of Sofia’s backstory. DC’s November 1, 2024 analysis reads the episode as a story about social villainization: when a person is labeled a monster, that treatment can help push them toward becoming what others expect. That is the article’s interpretation of the episode, not a neutral fact about what causes every villain—or the only possible reading of Sofia’s arc.

The choice to pause the forward-moving crime story for Sofia’s past gives the character more than a functional role as an obstacle for the Penguin. It asks viewers to consider the distance between the person a community says someone is and the person that treatment may help create. DC sums up its own framing this way: “HBO’s The Penguin is not interested in feeding the idea that evil is an inherent state of mind.” That sentence is from DC’s article, not a quotation from a cast member or creator.
Why was Sofia Falcone sent to Arkham?
The series’ account of Sofia’s past connects the treatment she receives to her eventual transformation. DC’s analysis emphasizes the way social villainization shapes that trajectory. The point is not that the story erases Sofia’s agency or makes her harmless; rather, it gives the audience context for how she came to occupy the role she does in Gotham’s underworld.

This distinction is what makes her more complicated than a simple “born evil” antagonist. Understanding the forces that shape Sofia does not excuse what she becomes. It changes the question from whether she is a villain to how the world around her helps make that identity possible. Viewers may weigh that tension differently, but the series makes her past part of the argument.
Is Sofia Falcone the Hangman in the comics?
Sofia has a comics counterpart associated with Batman: Dark Victory, but the television character should not be treated as an exact translation of that version. DC’s coverage explicitly contrasts the comic-book portrayal with the series’ substantially reworked characterization. The useful comparison is not a checklist of identical events; it is how each continuity uses the character and what the adaptation chooses to emphasize.

| Comparison | Comics reference | The Penguin |
|---|---|---|
| Source and continuity | Sofia’s comics counterpart is associated with Batman: Dark Victory, as noted in DC’s December 12, 2024 comparison. | A character in the crime saga continuing Matt Reeves’ The Batman, according to DC’s series description. |
| Story emphasis | DC presents the comic characterization as a point of contrast with the television version; the cited comparison does not establish that the two arcs are identical. | Episode four, “Cent’anni,” gives Sofia a dedicated backstory; DC’s episode analysis interprets her transformation through social villainization. |
| What the comparison means | A related character in a different continuity, not a binding template for every adaptation. | A reworking of the character for this series’ Gotham and its particular crime story. |
Adaptation changes are not automatically mistakes. The television series is telling a story within Reeves’ Gotham, and its version of Sofia serves that story’s interests. Calling her “the Hangman” may point readers toward the comics, but it does not make the TV arc identical to the comic-book one.
What makes Milioti’s performance part of the character’s appeal?
Sofia’s impact depends on the contrast between the person whose history the series reveals and the formidable figure she becomes within the Falcone world. The backstory gives that contrast meaning; the performance makes it legible as a character rather than an abstract theme. In an Esquire interview published November 3, 2024, Milioti discusses the role and Sofia’s arc. Her comments are the appropriate source for her perspective on the performance; the series’ characterization should not be confused with claims about acting choices that she has not made.

Why Sofia stands out among 2024’s Batman villains
“Most fascinating” is a critical judgment, not a measurable ranking. Sofia makes a persuasive case for that description because the series links her present power to a past the audience is invited to reconsider, while still allowing her to function as a dangerous antagonist. Episode four makes her transformation the subject rather than an incidental detail, and the adaptation’s distance from the comics gives the series space to define her on its own terms.
For viewers familiar with Batman: Dark Victory, the difference is an invitation to compare two versions rather than assume one cancels out the other. For viewers new to Sofia, the key is that her role is not simply “another Falcone” or a stock obstacle for the Penguin: she is a character whose imposed reputation, history, and choices all matter to the villain she becomes.
