Colin Farrell’s transformation into Oz Cobb in The Penguin came from a redesigned facial prosthetic makeup created by artist Mike Marino—not a single mask. The series makeup reportedly used eight or nine silicone pieces and took nearly three hours to apply. Separately, Robert Pattinson described one way Batman’s suit restricted movement in The Batman: reaching into a cage to retrieve a clue. That anecdote illustrates a practical limitation, not a full account of Batman’s fighting tactics.
How Colin Farrell became Oz Cobb
Mike Marino, the prosthetic makeup designer and artist behind the Penguin’s look, adapted the character’s appearance for the HBO series after Farrell’s physical appearance changed between filming The Batman and The Penguin. In the Television Academy’s April 18, 2025 feature, Marino explained: “We actually filmed the movie in 2020, and Colin’s physical appearance had changed, so I had to sort of reinvent the makeup for the show.” The Television Academy’s account describes Marino’s goal as a more realistic, refined look.
For the series, the team sculpted the pieces in clay, cast them in silicone, attached them to Farrell’s face, and painted in details including scars and freckles. The feature reports eight or nine pieces and nearly three hours of application. Those figures describe the series makeup as reported by the Television Academy; they are distinct from Farrell’s recollection of an earlier makeup test for the film.
Designed to leave room for expression
The prosthetics were integrated with Farrell’s own features rather than covering his face completely. Marino said, “You’re not completely covering his face. You’re integrating the prosthetics with his forehead, eyelids and ears and blending them together seamlessly.” Preserving expressive areas mattered: Farrell had to learn how his expressions read through the makeup, while Marino and the team refined the look for the series’ greater range of lighting and close-ups.

What wearing the makeup involved
The Television Academy feature also describes practical challenges during long shoot days. Sweat and costume collars could disturb the makeup; the crew used cooling measures, and Marino reviewed daily footage for problems that might need visual-effects correction. Farrell described the role as involving 14-hour days in prosthetics in an ITV This Morning interview. That is his account of the working day, not a claim that every hour was spent applying makeup.
How the series fits into The Batman’s story
The Penguin is an eight-episode DC Studios series continuing the story begun in The Batman, according to ITV’s 2024 interview with Farrell. It follows Oz’s climb through Gotham’s criminal underworld. In a September 17, 2024 cast-and-crew interview, director Matt Reeves described the character’s trajectory from someone who lacks respect in that world toward becoming a kingpin. Farrell also told ITV that one priority was making the series work for viewers unfamiliar with the mythology.

The facial transformation is only part of the character’s physical design: the CinemaBlend cast-and-crew interview also discusses the prosthetic clubfoot. The makeup and physical details help present Oz as a specific character, while Farrell’s performance supplies the expressions and behavior beneath them.
What Farrell said about the earlier film makeup test
Farrell’s figures for the initial The Batman makeup test should not be confused with the series application time. In a March 3, 2022 interview with GamesRadar+/Total Film, he recalled a six-to-eight-hour test involving around twelve people and six or eight prosthetic pieces. That was a test for the film, not the reported routine application for The Penguin. He also said his early conversations with Matt Reeves focused on Oz’s psychology and place in his criminal career before he saw Marino’s design. Farrell’s interview with GamesRadar+/Total Film captures that order of development.

What Batman’s suit did to one movement
The available example of Batman’s suit affecting movement comes from a cage scene in The Batman, in which Batman reaches in to retrieve a clue. Robert Pattinson said the suit limited the angles at which he could move his arm and made twisting into position difficult. In the CinemaBlend cast-interview transcript hosted by Dailymotion, he described trying to perform delicate motor actions at the wrong angle as “almost impossible,” and joked that getting the object out took many takes. The interview transcript supports a narrow point: the costume could complicate a precise hand movement.
It does not establish how the film’s fight scenes were choreographed, or that the suit dictated a general fighting style. The cage reach is a specific production anecdote, not a breakdown of Batman’s tactics across the film.

Why these two production stories are different
Farrell’s prosthetics and Pattinson’s suit are both examples of how physical design shaped performance, but they address different questions. Marino’s makeup changed Farrell’s appearance while leaving facial areas available for expression; Pattinson’s account concerns how a costume constrained a particular movement. Neither interview directly compares the two performers’ experiences. Taken together, they show how character design can affect both what an audience sees and what an actor can physically do in a scene.
