The Outsider is scary in a slow, unnerving way: its murder investigation starts with evidence that seems familiar, then steadily makes the ordinary rules of a crime story feel unreliable. That creeping uncertainty is its strongest horror effect. The trade-off is a patient pace that some viewers may find absorbing and others ponderous.
What is HBO’s The Outsider about?
The 2020 series adapts Stephen King’s novel of the same name. It opens with the gruesome murder of a boy and an investigation that appears, at first, to be a conventional case. As the evidence points in incompatible directions, a seasoned police detective and an unconventional investigator are drawn toward the possibility of a supernatural force. The story shifts from crime procedural to supernatural mystery without abandoning the investigation that set it in motion.

Richard Price adapted the story for television, and Jason Bateman directed the first two episodes, according to Warner Bros. Discovery’s series materials. The official HBO Max listing classifies it as Mystery & Suspense and lists the episodes. The season has ten episodes.
How scary is the series?
Its central scare is not simply the prospect of a killer. It is the growing suspicion that the facts cannot all be true at once—and that the investigators may have to make room for something impossible. The series builds dread by unsettling the viewer’s sense of what a crime scene, a suspect, or a piece of evidence can prove. That makes it more of a sustained, supernatural unease than a parade of conventional jump scares.
#1 Best Overall
Sight and Sound describes the opening as establishing “a mood of unease and shifting ground”. That captures the show’s approach: tension comes from uncertainty and atmosphere, with the investigation’s grim details adding weight. The premise and critical descriptions support that tonal reading; they do not amount to an objective measure of how frightening every viewer will find it.
Is The Outsider depressing?
The subject matter is bleak from the outset: the case concerns a child’s murder, and the investigation carries the emotional weight of that violence. The mood is sombre and often oppressive rather than playful or light. Viewers who find stories about murdered children especially distressing should take that premise seriously.
Rank #2
The series’ supernatural turn shifts the question from a straightforward account of a crime toward a mystery about what may be behind it. That change adds uncanny tension, but it does not make the material cheerful or erase the human grief at its center.
Does the slow pace work?
The deliberate buildup is the show’s main strength and its clearest limitation. For viewers who enjoy atmosphere, accumulating clues, and a mystery that leaves the familiar ground of police procedure, the patience can deepen the unease. For viewers who want brisk case-of-the-week momentum or quick answers, the same stretches may feel heavy.

The critical response reflects that divide. The Guardian’s review headline characterizes the pacing as “like CSI on sleeping pills”—a pointed criticism, not a neutral description. Vanity Fair calls it “a deliberate, ponderous mystery that grinds and allures,” acknowledging both the drag and the pull. Taken together, those judgments suggest a series whose slow burn is a matter of taste, not an incidental flaw that every viewer will experience the same way.
Who is likely to enjoy it?
- Try it if: you like supernatural mysteries that grow out of police investigations, gradual dread, and uncertainty about what the evidence means.
- Approach with caution if: stories centered on a child’s murder are distressing for you, or you prefer fast-moving procedural plots and frequent payoff.
The series is based on King’s novel, The Outsider. Reading the source book is a natural next step if you want to explore the story’s origin; the show’s adaptation is credited to Richard Price.
