Its six-episode first season was presented as a limited series and ends with Rick and Michonne returning to Alexandria. Co-creators Scott M. Gimple and Danai Gurira have left open the possibility of more stories, but that is not a Season 2 confirmation.
Has The Ones Who Live been renewed for Season 2?
No Season 2 order, production start, release date, or returning cast has been announced in the sources reviewed as of October 8, 2026. AMC+ lists Season 1, and the show was initially presented as a limited series. That means a second season is unconfirmed—not that the series has been formally cancelled.
What have the creators said about a second season?
At the Television Critics Association winter press tour, Gurira responded to a Season 2 question, “Can’t answer that.” Gimple added, “Let’s just be quiet on this one,” and said, “We’re focused on this one right now.” He also left the door open with “anything is possible.” Those comments conveyed uncertainty; they did not announce a renewal. TV Insider’s report on the press tour provides the context.
After the finale, Gimple told TVLine further Rick and Michonne storytelling was “possible.” He did not say that Season 2 was in development or ordered.

Gimple has also spoken about “nothing but possibility” for The Walking Dead universe as a whole. That broader franchise comment is not a Season 2 announcement for The Ones Who Live.
Why is the series called a limited series?
AMC announced The Ones Who Live as a new series starring Andrew Lincoln as Rick Grimes and Danai Gurira as Michonne, with Gimple as showrunner and executive producer. AMC set its premiere for February 25, 2024, on AMC and AMC+. The first season consists of six episodes and was framed as a limited series. AMC Networks’ announcement introduced the series, while the AMC+ listing currently shows Season 1.

The finale also gives the central story a degree of closure: Rick and Michonne make it back to Alexandria and reunite with their children. Netflix Tudum describes the six-episode run as a limited series that brings their story to a conclusion. A limited-series label and a resolved central arc help explain the first season’s shape, but neither rules out future stories. Netflix Tudum’s series guide is dated January 13, 2025.
Could Rick and Michonne return in another story?
It remains conceivable: Gimple has said more Rick-and-Michonne storytelling is possible. But the distinction matters. A possible future appearance, crossover, or other story is not the same as an ordered Season 2. No format, timeline, episode count, or cast for a follow-up has been confirmed in the sources reviewed.
AMC’s 2023 announcement explicitly said The Walking Dead: Daryl Dixon and Dead City had received Season 2 renewals while introducing The Ones Who Live as a new series. That historical comparison shows what an explicit renewal announcement looks like; it does not establish the current status of those other shows or imply a renewal for this one. AMC Networks’ 2023 announcement is the source for that comparison.
