Spoilers for The Old Guard (2020) and The Old Guard 2 (2025). The sequel’s shock reveal is that Discord (Uma Thurman), an ancient immortal, has become mortal. She wants Nile (KiKi Layne) to use her power over immortality to restore what Discord lost. The film ends with Discord holding Andy’s captured companions while Andy and Quynh reunite and prepare to fight together; it does not show the rescue or resolve Discord’s plan.
What is the big twist in The Old Guard 2?
Discord’s apparent status as an immortal is a misdirection: by the final confrontation, she is mortal. Her goal is to take advantage of Nile’s unusual ability to make immortals mortal, using that power to recover immortality for herself. Nile’s ability has already changed the stakes of the conflict, including when she injures Quynh.

The reveal turns Discord from a threat pursuing the others into someone trying to reclaim something she has lost. It also makes Nile central to the outcome: Discord captures her and wants to control how her power is used.
How does the ending unfold?
Booker gives his immortality to Andy during the climax. Discord captures Nile and other members of Andy’s group, leaving their fate uncertain. The film does not show whether Discord succeeds in restoring her immortality or what she intends to do with the people she has taken.

Andy and Quynh choose each other
Andy and Quynh’s reunion begins in anger. Quynh has endured centuries underwater, and the film lets that history shape their encounter rather than treating her return as an uncomplicated homecoming. By the final moments, they reconcile and set out to fight together. The closing beat points toward an effort to rescue the others, but the rescue itself is not shown.
What the cliffhanger leaves open
- Whether Discord can regain immortality.
- What happens to Nile and the other captured members of the group.
- How Andy and Quynh’s attempt to fight back proceeds.
Those unresolved questions make the ending a cliffhanger, not a completed account of the characters’ next steps.

Why did director Victoria Mahoney choose a hopeful ending?
Mahoney said the filmmakers discussed what emotion they wanted audiences to carry out of the film. In a July 3, 2025, interview with SuperHeroHype, she described the intended effect this way: “There were so many discussions about how we would leave audiences. And what the emotion, the strongest emotion to leave them with [was]. And to some degree, that ending brings about wonderment and hope and joy.” She added that she did not “want to see a dark, gut-wrenching ending right now in a movie like this.”
In a CinemaBlend interview published July 4, 2025, Mahoney called the cliffhanger and its form “a group decision.” She said Skydance pushed for an ending that was “hopeful.” She also wanted Quynh’s return to lead to a meaningful reunion with Andy, rather than leave Quynh alone after her return. These comments explain the emotional aim behind the final beat; they do not establish that a further film will be made.

Does the ending confirm The Old Guard 3?
No. An unresolved ending can set up another story, but it is not confirmation that a sequel has been greenlit. Mahoney told CinemaBlend she did not know what a next installment would do and would not direct it. TIME’s July 2, 2025, coverage said a third film had not been confirmed at that time. The available comments and reporting establish the cliffhanger’s intent, not a production commitment.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. How does the film differ from the comics?
The Old Guard films adapt Greg Rucka and Leandro Fernández’s Image Comics series, but the sequel’s Discord story is not a direct retelling of the second volume, Force Multiplied. TIME notes that Discord is not part of that volume, which follows a different conflict. The comics are source material for the films, not a guide to the sequel’s specific ending.

Netflix’s Tudum guide credits Victoria Mahoney as director and Greg Rucka and Sarah L. Walker as co-writers, and describes the team, Quynh’s return, and the new threat. Netflix’s Media Center title page provides official title and creative-credit context. The film is identified as streaming on Netflix; availability may vary by territory.
