Plex’s redesigned app experience launched without Watch Together, the feature that synchronized viewing for people watching from different locations. Plex said the web app would remain a way to use it for the foreseeable future, but in September 2025 a company representative said bringing it back to the new apps was not on the active or planned project list. That was a dated update, not a statement of Plex’s October 2026 roadmap or the feature’s status in every client today.
What Plex changed in the app redesign
Plex began broadly rolling out its redesigned mobile app on March 31, 2025. The company described the new experience as a unified interface for personal media, on-demand content, discovery and social features. Changes included redesigned navigation, a more prominent Watchlist, expanded artwork and a dedicated area for personal-media libraries. The redesign’s launch announcement is Plex’s March 2025 overview.
Watch Together was omitted from apps using the new experience at launch. The omission was part of a broader product redesign, but it removed a specific way for friends and family at a distance to synchronize a viewing session. Plex’s rollout announcement said full support for the new app required Plex Media Server version 1.41.2 or later.
Can you still use Watch Together?
Plex’s March 4, 2025 forum response said the web app would continue to support Watch Together for the foreseeable future. That makes a browser the documented fallback in Plex’s statement; it does not establish that the feature is available on every browser, device or client today. Plex’s forum response also said the company did not rule out offering similar functionality again in the future.

Availability varied by client as the new experience rolled out. In a September 25, 2025 forum AMA, Plex representative McWanke said the feature remained in many clients at that time, with mobile apps and Roku among the exceptions. The same representative said it was “not currently on our active or planned project list.” These statements describe Plex’s position on those dates; they do not confirm which clients support it now or whether Plex has since changed its plans. See the September 2025 Plex forum AMA.
What to check before arranging a watch session
- Check the client each participant will use. Plex’s September 2025 statement identified mobile apps and Roku as exceptions then, but it is not a current, complete compatibility list.
- If the feature is absent in the app, try Plex in a browser. Plex identified the web app as a continuing fallback in March 2025. Confirm that the people joining can access the feature there before setting a time.
- Confirm the server requirement if using the redesigned app. Plex said full support for the new experience required Plex Media Server 1.41.2 or later; this is a requirement for the redesigned app experience, not a promise that Watch Together is present in it.
Did Plex say Watch Together would return?
No return was promised in the cited statements. On March 4, 2025, Plex representative BigWheel said the company did “not preclude the possibility of offering similar functionality again in the future.” That leaves open a possibility; it is not a commitment to restore Watch Together or a date for doing so. In September 2025, McWanke said it was not on the active or planned project list at that time.

A separate change to remote streaming on Roku
In a November 19, 2025 announcement, Plex said Remote Watch Pass or Plex Pass would be required for remote streaming to Roku beginning the following week, and that similar requirements would come to other TV apps and third-party API clients in 2026. That announcement concerns remote-streaming access, not whether Watch Together is available in a particular client. The cited information does not establish how fully those requirements were implemented or what the current policy is. See Plex’s Roku announcement.
