The project commonly called The Office reboot is actually The Paper—a new workplace mockumentary set in the same universe as the U.S. series, not a remake with a recast Michael Scott. The story moves from Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch to the struggling Toledo Truth Teller newspaper, with Domhnall Gleeson and Sabrina Impacciatore leading a new ensemble. Oscar Nuñez returns as Oscar Martinez, while the original documentary crew also becomes part of the premise.
Season 1 premiered on Peacock on September 4, 2025, with all 10 episodes released at once. Peacock has renewed the series for Season 2, which is scheduled to premiere exclusively in the United States on September 9, 2026, with every episode released that day.
Is The Paper a reboot of The Office?
Not in the strict sense. Peacock describes The Paper as a new series set in The Office universe. It preserves the mockumentary format and brings back the documentary crew that filmed Dunder Mifflin’s Scranton branch, but it introduces a different workplace, a different central conflict and a mostly new cast.
That makes “same-universe follow-up,” “spinoff-style sequel” or “companion series” more accurate descriptions than “direct reboot.” The show is not a scene-for-scene remake, and it is not built around a new actor playing Michael Scott, Jim Halpert, Pam Beesly or Dwight Schrute.

The Paper story and setting
The new series is set at the Toledo Truth Teller, a historic Midwestern newspaper struggling to survive. The paper’s publisher brings in Ned Sampson to revive the operation. At the same time, the documentary crew that previously recorded the Scranton branch is looking for a new subject.
Ned’s revival plan focuses on local, objective and original content. That mission places him among professional reporters, editors, accountants and amateur writers, creating a workplace ensemble very different from the sales-focused staff at Dunder Mifflin.
The change in setting gives the mockumentary a new set of pressures to examine. The original series found comedy in office routines, sales targets, petty rivalries and personal relationships inside a regional paper-distribution company. The Paper applies a similar observational lens to local journalism, newsroom authority, community identity, declining institutions and the pressure to create attention-grabbing stories without losing sight of the people a newspaper serves. That thematic comparison is an interpretation of the confirmed premise, rather than a formally announced Peacock theme statement.
Who is in The Paper?
| Actor | Character or role confirmed | What is known |
|---|---|---|
| Domhnall Gleeson | Ned Sampson | The enthusiastic editor-in-chief brought in to help revive the Toledo Truth Teller. |
| Sabrina Impacciatore | Esmeralda | The newspaper’s colorful managing editor. |
| Oscar Nuñez | Oscar Martinez | The returning Office character, now the head accountant at the Toledo Truth Teller and connected to the Arts & Leisure beat. |
| Chelsea Frei | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Melvin Gregg | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Gbemisola Ikumelo | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Alex Edelman | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Ramona Young | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Tim Key | Role details not fully identified in the cited official materials | A member of the principal ensemble. |
| Eric Rahill | Season 2 cast information listed by Peacock | Included in Peacock’s Fall 2026 Season 2 cast information. |
| Duane Shepard Sr. | Season 2 cast information listed by Peacock | Included in Peacock’s Fall 2026 Season 2 cast information. |
The most important casting distinction is between the new ensemble and Oscar Nuñez’s returning character. Peacock has confirmed Nuñez as Oscar Martinez, but the available official materials do not announce a full reunion of the original Scranton cast.
Is Oscar Nuñez returning as Oscar Martinez?
Yes. Oscar Nuñez is the prominently confirmed returning member of the original U.S. The Office cast. Oscar Martinez now works as the head accountant at the Toledo Truth Teller and is also associated with the Arts & Leisure beat.
The premise uses Oscar’s unease about being filmed again as one of the clearest connections between the old series and the new one. The returning documentary crew is therefore more than a background explanation: it gives The Paper a direct link to the Scranton story while allowing the new newsroom to stand on its own.

Will Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer or Rainn Wilson appear?
No full original-cast reunion has been announced in the available Peacock materials. Oscar Nuñez is the confirmed returning regular. There is no confirmed announcement that Steve Carell, John Krasinski, Jenna Fischer, Rainn Wilson or other original regulars are scheduled to appear.
The structure of The Paper is specifically designed around a new newspaper staff. Familiar characters could only be described as returning if Peacock, NBCUniversal or the relevant actor officially confirms a specific appearance. The existence of the original documentary crew should not be treated as evidence that the entire Scranton ensemble is coming back.

Who created The Paper?
Greg Daniels, who developed the U.S. version of The Office, created The Paper with Michael Koman. Daniels and Koman are also identified as executive producers. Universal Television produces the series for Peacock.
Daniels’ creative direction helps explain why the project is not a conventional reboot. Instead of recasting the original characters in an identical office setup, the series explores another workplace in the same fictional world.
When did Season 1 premiere?
Season 1 premiered on September 4, 2025. Peacock released all 10 episodes at once, so the first season is not an upcoming series and is not following a weekly rollout.
Peacock announced the renewal shortly before the premiere, confirming that the company had committed to a second season before the first season became available.

Season 2 is scheduled to premiere on Wednesday, September 9, 2026, exclusively on Peacock in the United States. Peacock’s announcement says every Season 2 episode will be released on that date.
The available announcement does not establish a final Season 2 episode count. Season 1 had a confirmed 10-episode total, but that number should not be carried over to Season 2 unless Peacock publishes a definitive episode listing.
Peacock’s Fall 2026 schedule repeats the returning principal cast information, including Domhnall Gleeson, Sabrina Impacciatore, Oscar Nuñez, Chelsea Frei, Melvin Gregg, Gbemisola Ikumelo, Alex Edelman, Ramona Young, Tim Key, Eric Rahill and Duane Shepard Sr.
Where can you watch The Paper?

International availability must be checked by territory. Peacock’s U.S. announcements do not establish that the series is available on Peacock in every country. Sky Group, for example, announced an Italian release through Sky and NOW. Viewers outside the United States should check local listings and the current rights holder in their country rather than assuming that the U.S. platform applies worldwide.

What should fans of the original own or revisit?
The Paper is not presented as a replacement for the original series. It is a way to revisit the mockumentary format through a new institution and a new group of characters. Fans who want to return to the Scranton story can consider The Office Superfan Extended Episodes Blu-ray, whose physical release was announced for July 14, 2026. This is a product for the original franchise, not merchandise or a home-video release of The Paper.
For gifts, the official NBCUniversal Shop has listed licensed items including a World’s Best Boss mug, character mugs, a Dunder Mifflin mouse pad, shirts, signs and posters. These are optional fan products rather than necessary companion items, and individual stock or regional availability may change.

The safest way to follow future updates is to distinguish official Peacock or NBCUniversal announcements from casting rumors and unsupported “reboot” headlines. The confirmed facts are already enough to define the project: a new newspaper workplace, a returning documentary crew, Oscar Martinez as the main original-series link and a new ensemble led by Ned Sampson.
