The Neighborhood season 7 premiered on October 21, 2024, ran for 20 episodes and concluded on May 5, 2025. The season follows Marty and Courtney Butler as they bring baby Daphne home, while the Butler and Johnson families navigate sleep deprivation, childcare, education, money, changing relationships and new neighbors. Its two-part finale sends Malcolm Butler toward a new life in Venice and doubles as a backdoor pilot for a proposed spinoff that CBS ultimately did not order.
Season 7 is not the series finale. CBS renewed The Neighborhood for an eighth and final season, making season 7 the penultimate chapter.
What is The Neighborhood season 7 about?
The season begins immediately after Marty and Courtney become parents. In the premiere, they bring their daughter, Daphne, home from the hospital. Marty decides to take paternity leave under Dave Johnson’s employee handbook, setting up one of the season’s central questions: how can a new father balance work, family responsibilities and his own uncertainty about parenthood?
The early episodes turn ordinary newborn problems into neighborhood-wide situations. Marty, Courtney and the rest of the Butlers struggle with sleepless nights, daycare, the baby’s christening and the emotional difficulty of returning to work. The show keeps its ensemble-comedy format, but Daphne’s arrival changes the practical and emotional dynamics of the Butler family.
Other storylines broaden the season beyond new parenthood:
- Tina’s father: Tina deals with her newly single father and the possibility that he may need to reunite with his wife after age-related impairments become a concern.
- Grover’s education: Dave and Gemma face the cost of private school and the pressure surrounding Grover’s high-school applications.
- Community change: New neighbors, a neighborhood social app and changing local institutions test the Butlers’ and Johnsons’ familiar routines.
- Malcolm’s next chapter: Malcolm receives an unexpected opportunity connected to USC baseball, explores creative writing and eventually prepares to move to Venice.

| Beth Behrs | Gemma Johnson | Dave’s wife and Grover’s mother. |

What happens in the season 7 finale?
The finale is an hour-long event made up of “Welcome to Pomp & Circumstance” and “Welcome to Venice.” The first half brings Malcolm and Grover’s educational milestones into the family story through a joint graduation celebration planned by Tina and Gemma.
The second half shifts attention toward Malcolm’s future. The families help him begin a new life in Venice, creating a meaningful transition for a character who has spent the season weighing professional opportunities and creative ambitions. The move is also tied to Marty, whose new responsibilities as a father remain part of the broader family transition.
Was “Welcome to Venice” a spinoff pilot?
Yes—but it was a backdoor pilot, not a completed spinoff series. The episode was designed to introduce an untitled potential show about Malcolm and Marty Butler leaving their parents’ home and becoming newcomers in Venice Beach.
The proposed project included Sheaun McKinney and Marcel Spears, along with Justin Long, Kara Royster, Angelique Cabral and Hunter King. CBS ultimately declined to move forward with the spinoff. The network still broadcast “Welcome to Venice” as the second half of the season 7 finale, so viewers can see the setup even though no separate Malcolm-and-Marty series followed.
The canceled spinoff did not make Malcolm’s story irrelevant. Later reporting indicated that his move and the consequences of the finale continued to affect season 8.

Season 7 works as a transition season on several levels. Marty and Courtney’s baby changes the Butler family’s everyday rhythm, while Grover’s education and Malcolm’s career force the Johnsons and Butlers to think about longer-term futures rather than just neighborhood problems.

Malcolm’s Venice storyline is the biggest structural change. Venice is close enough to remain connected to the established neighborhood, but distinct enough to give the character a different setting and social environment. That makes the finale both a family milestone and an experiment with a possible new series. Because CBS did not order the spinoff, the episode is best understood as an attempted expansion of the show—not as the launch of an active standalone program.
