The U.S. version of The Masked Singer opened Season 12 on September 25, 2024, with a clue about a contestant’s friendship with Beyoncé—and its first elimination revealed former Denver Broncos quarterback John Elway as Leaf Sheep. The Beyoncé connection was part of Woodpecker’s clue package, not a confirmed identification of the singer.
Which episode does this recap cover?
The episode was the Season 12 premiere, titled “Season 12 Premiere: Who Can it Be Now?” FOX listed it as episode MS-1201 and rated it TV-PG L. Nick Cannon hosted, with Ken Jeong, Rita Ora, Robin Thicke, and Jenny McCarthy Wahlberg on the panel. FOX said clues could appear in costumes, song choices, and on-stage moments. What was the Beyoncé clue?
Woodpecker’s Masked Ambassador was Miss Cleocatra, identified in a PEOPLE recap excerpt as Jenifer Lewis. Lewis introduced the contestant with this description: “She’s been called a mogul, a chic CEO and she then became friends with Beyoncé.” That wording is a clue attributed to Lewis; it does not establish Woodpecker’s identity. The available excerpt does not provide enough detail to identify the masked singer.
The Masked Ambassador was a new Season 12 feature: a former contestant with a special connection to a masked singer who could offer clues. The ambassador’s connection and comments add context, but they are not the same as an unmasking.

What happened with Buffalo?
In the available PEOPLE recap excerpt, Buffalo performed “(I Just) Died in Your Arms” by Cutting Room. Two more Buffaloes emerged during the performance, and the ambassador’s additional clue was a crown. Panelists guessed B2K, Earth, Wind & Fire, and the rest of 98 Degrees; those were guesses, not confirmed identities.
Who was Leaf Sheep on The Masked Singer?
Leaf Sheep was the premiere’s first elimination and was revealed as John Elway. FOX TV Stations reported that Elway spent 16 years with the Denver Broncos and won two Super Bowls. He said the performance was outside his comfort zone: “That was definitely not my comfort zone doing this, but I had the opportunity and took advantage of it,” Elway shared. Robin Thicke welcomed him, saying, “We’re honored to have you here.” (FOX TV Stations’ premiere recap)
