Season 2 refreshes the show’s format, settings and some key production roles without discarding its bright, picturesque character. It is a strong next stop for viewers who enjoy an ensemble mystery—and its first case also adapts a Robert Thorogood novel.
What changes in Season 2?
The first season’s central dynamic remains: Judith Potts, Becks Starling and Suzie Harris investigate, while DS Tanika Malik brings the perspective and authority of a serving police officer. What develops is how the four work together. In the PBS cast preview, returning cast members describe the group’s chemistry and sisterhood, and explain that the women work more closely with the police as Tanika comes to recognize their value. Tanika is an ally in the evolving working relationship, not an amateur sleuth who joins the club.
The season also changes its case structure: six episodes are arranged as three two-part stories, each with its own murders, locations and guest cast. Behind the camera, director Steve Barron and the cinematographer returned, while the production added a new producer, production designer and costume designer. The PBS making-of feature describes an effort to preserve the show’s bright, picturesque feel while expanding location work beyond Marlow’s center. That is a refresh, not a wholesale reinvention.

The returning leads are Samantha Bond as Judith Potts, Jo Martin as Suzie Harris, Cara Horgan as Becks Starling and Natalie Dew as DS Tanika Malik, as listed on the PBS Season 2 episode page.

The “girl gang” appeal lies in the contrast among the women as much as in their friendship: they bring different lives, skills and access to a mystery, while Tanika’s police role keeps the group’s relationship with official investigations in view.

Episodes 1–2: A wedding-week murder
Sir Peter Bailey is found dead on the eve of his wedding. His fiancée, son and ex-wife all come under scrutiny, while coded crosswords become part of Judith’s investigation. This opening two-parter adapts Robert Thorogood’s second Marlow novel, Death Comes to Marlow.
Episodes 3–4: Secrets on Linnet Close
A body turns up on Linnet Close, a street that appears to be an ideal suburban community. The police later uncover a skeleton, complicating assumptions about both the victim and the neighborhood. This is a new standalone television story rather than an adaptation of the second novel.

Episodes 5–6: Trouble at the sailing club
A member of the Marlow Sailing Club dies in what initially looks like an accident. The women find evidence of murder, and an archaeological dig and thefts become part of the investigation. This is also a standalone story created for the series.
How does Season 2 compare with Season 1?
The clearest differences are structural and production-related, rather than a documented verdict that the new season is better. Season 2 parcels its six episodes into three cases, expands the locations, and gives the women a closer working relationship with Tanika. It also changes some crew roles while retaining the director and cinematographer. The production team’s stated aim was to keep the show’s picturesque tone, so the refresh is designed to widen the setting and vary the mysteries without losing the series’ recognizable atmosphere.

UKTV’s 2024 announcement said the first season’s first episode recorded 2.7 million total consumption, a broadcaster-defined figure counting people aged four and up across all homes over 28-day TV and online viewing, including pre-broadcast viewing and same-week repeats. The same announcement said the Marlow novels had sold more than 350,000 copies across 24 territories at that time. Those are dated UKTV figures, not current franchise totals or independent measures of Season 2’s reception. UKTV head of drama Helen Perry called the series a “smash hit with viewers” in explaining its return; that is the broadcaster’s commissioning rationale, not a critical consensus.

No. The first two episodes adapt Death Comes to Marlow, but the two later cases are original standalone stories, so the novel is a companion for the opening mystery rather than a book version of the whole season. You can start with the television series without reading it; if you want to compare the opening case with its source, the second book is the relevant one. The adaptation detail is from UKTV’s Season 2 announcement.

Where and when can you watch Season 2?
The US PBS broadcast ran on Sundays from August 24 through September 28, 2025, so it is not an upcoming premiere. A PBS episode page reviewed for this article listed a Passport expiration date of September 27, 2032 for that page; that does not guarantee access to every episode, in every location, until that date. Streaming rights and availability vary by region and can change. In the UK, UKTV describes U as a free streaming service, but that does not mean it is available internationally.
For viewers looking beyond Season 2, UKTV announced in June 2026 that Season 4 had been commissioned and was planned for U in 2027. That is a stated plan, not a guaranteed release date. The broadcaster’s updates are available in its Season 4 announcement.
