John Cena’s best WWE match depends on what you value: ring work, stakes, story, or career significance. This ranked list weighs all four, alongside pacing, crowd response, and opponent chemistry. It spans different eras and match formats rather than treating WrestleMania alone as the measure. WWE says Cena retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025, so the ranking considers his complete career, including his final run. There is no official or objective top ten; this is an editorial ranking, using WWE’s match archive as a candidate pool.
How this ranking works
Each match is assessed for in-ring execution and pacing, stakes and format, story payoff, crowd response, opponent chemistry, and importance to Cena’s career. No single factor decides the order: a technically strong bout can rank below one whose story and consequences made it more memorable. WWE’s 50 greatest matches archive provides a broad pool and event-level descriptions, but WWE’s promotional assessments are not an independent consensus ranking.
10. John Cena vs. Randy Orton — SummerSlam 2007
WWE Championship match
Orton repeatedly hit Cena with RKOs, but Cena recovered and retained the WWE Championship. The comeback structure gives the match a clear dramatic spine: Orton appears to have the champion beaten, and Cena has to endure the challenger’s best weapon before turning the momentum. It earns a place for its crisp, memorable finish and for capturing the central appeal of Cena’s championship character without requiring an elaborate stipulation.
9. John Cena vs. Kurt Angle — 2002
SmackDown debut match
Cena’s first televised WWE match came against Kurt Angle on SmackDown in June 2002. Angle won, but the bout matters because it introduced Cena to WWE audiences in a demanding test against an established, technically accomplished opponent. It is a useful reminder that a career-defining match need not end in a victory: this one established the rookie’s toughness and launched the path that the later entries in this list would build on.

8. John Cena vs. Shawn Michaels — WrestleMania 23
WWE Championship match
Cena defended the WWE Championship against Shawn Michaels in a long, high-profile singles match. Michaels’ offense and timing gave Cena a different kind of challenge from the power-based or brawling opponents he often faced, and the match built steadily toward Cena’s successful title defense. It ranks here for its sustained pacing and the contrast in styles, while the result also helped establish Cena as the face of WWE on its biggest annual stage.
7. John Cena vs. Edge — Unforgiven 2006
TLC match for the WWE Championship
Cena defeated Edge in Edge’s hometown of Toronto to win the WWE Championship in a Tables, Ladders and Chairs match. The stipulation made the rivalry’s physical escalation part of the match’s structure, while the hometown setting sharpened the crowd dynamic. The victory completed a major chapter in a feud that had pushed Cena into more personal, aggressive territory, making the title change feel like a payoff rather than just another championship result.

The crowd’s investment amplified the tension throughout, and the match’s finish made the outcome consequential beyond the bell. It ranks high for combining a strong performance with a rivalry premise and setting that gave every near-fall added weight.
5. John Cena vs. Triple H — WrestleMania 22
WWE Championship match
Cena retained the WWE Championship against Triple H in a match built around the challenger’s attempt to take the title from the ascendant champion. Triple H’s confident, methodical offense gave the bout a clear antagonist-and-champion dynamic, while the crowd response made Cena’s position as WWE’s leading star unmistakable. Its place in the ranking reflects both the match’s big-event pacing and its role in confirming Cena’s status at the top of the card.

4. John Cena vs. The Rock — WrestleMania 29
WWE Championship match
After losing to The Rock at WrestleMania 28, Cena won the 2013 Royal Rumble and chose Rock as his opponent for a rematch. At WrestleMania 29, Cena reclaimed the WWE Championship. That reversal is the match’s essential dramatic engine: Cena returned to the same stage and opponent who had beaten him the year before, then corrected the result. WWE records both the Rumble victory and the title win, making this a career-payoff match as much as a championship bout. WWE’s Royal Rumble statistics list Cena as the 2013 winner.
3. John Cena vs. Brock Lesnar — Extreme Rules 2012
Extreme Rules match
Lesnar returned to WWE and met Cena in a violent, stipulation-driven contest that immediately changed the feel of Cena’s usual main-event formula. Rather than a conventional title defense, this was a collision with an opponent presented as a physical threat unlike any Cena had faced. The match ranks for its intensity, its distinctly different pacing, and the way it opened a new chapter in Cena’s career by forcing him to meet an opponent on punishing terms.

2. John Cena vs. The Undertaker — WrestleMania 34
Singles match
Cena challenged The Undertaker at WrestleMania 34 after weeks of calling him out, but the encounter was brief and emphatic: Undertaker returned and defeated Cena. The short length is part of the point. It subverted the expectation of a long, competitive showcase and turned the match into a dramatic appearance and decisive result. It ranks near the top not for technical depth, but for its sharp use of anticipation, spectacle, and the WrestleMania setting.

Why some famous matches missed the ten
Cena’s 2008 Royal Rumble victory is one of the defining moments of his career: after a pectoral injury, he made a surprise return at No. 30 and won by eliminating Triple H. WWE’s statistics page also records Cena as the last person eliminated in the 2005 and 2010 Rumbles. The Rumble is a standout career moment, but this ranking prioritizes matches with a more sustained one-on-one story or in-ring contest. Likewise, other strong candidates from Cena’s rivalries with Edge, Orton, Punk, and Michaels had to compete for limited places; their omission is not a claim that they lack merit.
Start with WrestleMania 29
For one match that best captures Cena’s mixture of championship stakes, career narrative, and dramatic payoff, start with his WrestleMania 29 rematch against The Rock. To explore beyond this list, WWE’s John Cena match archive collects a broader set of career highlights. WWE also published a WrestleMania match marathon on March 8, 2025. Streaming availability can vary by date and location.
Cena’s final career chapter
WWE’s John Cena profile says he retired from in-ring competition at the end of 2025. It also records his 2025 heel turn, 17th world title win at WrestleMania 41, return to his old demeanor before SummerSlam 2025, and Grand Slam achievement in November. Those milestones make the final run part of the story of Cena’s career, even though this list’s selections favor matches with a clearly documented defining contest and payoff.
