The Apprentice is a deliberately narrow, abrasive portrait of Donald Trump’s rise, centered on his relationship with lawyer and political fixer Roy Cohn. Its brutality lies in the film’s depiction of ambition shaped by Cohn’s influence and in its collisions between public ascent and private conduct—not in any claim that it is a complete or definitive account of Trump’s life.
What is The Apprentice about?
Directed by Ali Abbasi and written by Gabriel Sherman, the 2024 feature follows a young Trump as he enters Cohn’s orbit. The Festival de Cannes describes the story as a “Faustian deal” with Cohn and calls the film “a dive into the underbelly of the American empire.” That language signals the movie’s dramatic, critical framing rather than a neutral historical survey. Festival de Cannes
Abbasi told the Associated Press, “This is not a biopic of Donald Trump,” explaining that the filmmakers were not trying to cover his life “from A to Z.” Their focus, he said, was “a very specific story through his relationship with Roy and Roy’s relationship with him.” The result is a formative-years drama, not a cradle-to-present biography or a film about Trump’s later political career. Who stars in the film?
Sebastian Stan plays Donald Trump, Jeremy Strong plays Roy Cohn, and Maria Bakalova plays Ivana Trump, according to the Cannes credits. The performances are central to the film’s portrait: the story turns on the dynamic between Stan’s Trump and Strong’s Cohn, while Bakalova’s Ivana is part of its account of Trump’s private life. How does the film make its portrait feel brutal?
The film’s harshness comes from its view of power as something learned and practiced. Cohn is presented as a mentor whose influence helps shape Trump’s public ambition, while the narrative sets that ascent against intimate relationships and conduct. It is an unsettling frame: rather than treating success as a self-contained business story, the movie asks what habits and costs accompany the pursuit of power.
That is an interpretation of the film’s emphasis, not an objective verdict that it is the “most brutal” Trump biopic or a consensus critical ranking. TIME’s May 2024 review described the movie as fascinating and thoughtful, praised the leads, and also criticized its restraint. The review reads the story as tracing Trump’s change from striver to powerful figure through Cohn’s teachings, while leaving questions about Cohn’s humanity unresolved. Those are one critic’s judgments; they help explain why the film can be provocative in subject yet restrained in style. TIME

Is The Apprentice based on a true story?
The Associated Press reported that the film was labeled “inspired by true events.” That wording matters: it presents a dramatization, not a documentary record. The movie draws on real public figures and events, but its scenes, dialogue, sequencing, and framing should not be treated as proof that every moment happened exactly as shown. AP reported that Cohn aided the Trump Organization early in the period depicted, when it faced a federal housing-discrimination suit. Associated Press
The film’s depiction of Ivana Trump
The film includes a scene depicting Trump raping Ivana Trump. AP reported that Ivana used the word “rape” in a 1990 divorce deposition; Trump denied the allegation, and Ivana later said she had not meant the word literally but had felt violated. The scene is a dramatic representation of a contested account, not evidence that establishes the allegation as fact. Associated Press

What was the film’s release controversy?
At Cannes in May 2024, AP described the film as a scathing portrait and reported controversy surrounding its makers. In October 2024, AP reported that Trump’s campaign had pledged legal action after Cannes and called the film “election interference by Hollywood elites”; the same report noted praise for the two lead performances. These are dated campaign and press accounts, not an update on any current legal status. AP, May 2024 · AP, October 2024
