But in TheWrap’s assessment, those strengths cannot overcome sluggish storytelling, familiar genre machinery and a central character kept at too great an emotional distance. Michael Fassbender is watchable; the show around him struggles to generate momentum.
What is The Agency about?
Paramount describes The Agency as a political thriller and a fresh take on the French series Le Bureau des légendes. Fassbender plays Martian, a CIA agent living undercover in his own life. He is ordered to leave that life and return to London Station; when a former love re-enters the picture, his mission and career collide with his private feelings. Paramount’s official series listing provides the premise and current catalog details.
The setup gives the show a natural source of tension: an operative trained to conceal who he is must weigh duty against intimacy. Fassbender described the character’s conflict to Associated Press Entertainment Writer Mark Kennedy this way: “It’s the battle of his soul between what he does for a living and the relationships he has.” The AP interview frames that as the character’s struggle, not a guarantee that the drama makes it emotionally involving.
Can Fassbender carry the show?
In TheWrap’s November 25, 2024 review, Zaki Hasan finds Fassbender compelling to watch and able to suggest Martian’s inner conflict. The problem is that the character’s secrecy and detachment leave him opaque. Restraint can suit an intelligence officer, but when a drama gives viewers little access to what he wants or fears, it becomes harder to invest in the danger surrounding him.

- Read Before You Buy — No Video Output: These adapters support charging and USB 2.0 data transfer, but cannot transmit video signals. Except for standard USB webcams (which use USB data only), they are not compatible with HDMI/DisplayPort cables, video-capable USB-C hubs, or docking stations with video output.
- Convert USB-A Ports to USB-C: Designed to connect USB-C earphones, cables, flash drives, card readers, and other USB-C accessories to standard USB-A ports. Plug-and-play with no drivers or software required.
- Aluminum Alloy Housing: Built with a sturdy aluminum alloy shell that aids in heat dissipation and protects against daily wear and scratches. Designed to maintain a stable and secure connection.
- Compact & Travel-Friendly: The ultra-compact design allows the adapter to stay plugged into your device without blocking adjacent ports or adding bulk, reducing wear and tear on your original USB ports.
- 12-Month Warranty: Backed by a 12-month manufacturer warranty for peace of mind. Designed to meet strict quality control standards for reliable everyday performance.
That distinction matters: Hasan’s criticism is not that Fassbender gives a poor performance. Rather, the performance cannot supply the narrative drive and emotional clarity the writing withholds. The show asks its lead to embody a divided identity, yet keeps that division difficult to read.
Why does the spy drama feel like a slog?
Hasan credits the series with an intriguing premise, a strong cast and high production values, but argues that the story falls back on spy-drama shorthand. The early episodes, in his view, are sluggish and unfocused, with limited tension and jargon-heavy plotting that does not resolve into a coherent whole. Subplots and the relationship story arrive before the audience has enough pieces to understand their weight.

The review says the first two episodes do not yet give the story a firm focus; Hasan sees it begin to find direction only near the end of episode three. That is a significant wait for a thriller whose appeal depends on competing loyalties, secrecy and the possibility that one mistake could undo an operation.
What works: atmosphere, cast and a proven blueprint
Joe Wright’s direction gives the opening episodes a lush, shadowed, cinematic look. TheWrap also recognizes the appeal of a cast that includes Jeffrey Wright, Jodie Turner-Smith, Katherine Waterston, John Magaro and Richard Gere alongside Fassbender. Paramount’s premiere announcement lists the principal cast and credits Wright with directing the first two episodes.

Yet Hasan argues that polish outpaces the storytelling. Jeffrey Wright and Richard Gere, in particular, are underused in his assessment, often asked to deliver exposition rather than shape the drama through fully developed roles. The result is a show with the surface of a prestige thriller but, for this reviewer, too little narrative urgency beneath it.
How does it compare with the French original and other spy shows?
The Agency is adapted from Le Bureau des légendes, a source that gives it a strong espionage-drama blueprint but also invites comparison. Hasan sees the remake as insufficiently inventive or deep next to shows such as The Night Manager, Slow Horses, Jack Ryan and The Day of the Jackal. His criticism centers on pace, clarity, tension and the balance between atmosphere and plot—not simply on whether the premise is familiar.

There is not a single critical verdict. In a May 22, 2025 review for Le Monde, Thomas Sotinel gives more weight to the cast, realistic staging and geopolitical material, and judges the adaptation to hold its place among current espionage shows. He also notes how comparisons with the French original shape reception and argues that the season’s portrayal of US policy in Eastern Europe had already become dated by the time he reviewed it. That is one critic’s assessment, not a settled judgment about the series as a whole. Read Sotinel’s review in Le Monde.
