Is The Lost Bus based on a true story?
Apple describes the film as inspired by real events and says its central crisis follows a bus driver and teacher trying to save 22 children from a wildfire. The Associated Press identifies the historical setting as California’s 2018 Camp Fire. That establishes the event behind the story, but the available descriptions do not claim that every scene or character detail is a literal reconstruction.
The film is based on Lizzie Johnson’s nonfiction book Paradise: One Town’s Struggle to Survive an American Wildfire. Readers seeking a nonfiction account of the disaster can turn to Johnson’s book; it is the source identified by Apple, rather than a film tie-in book. Apple’s announcement names the book and author.
