“Doomed to Die,” the penultimate episode of The Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power Season 2, makes the siege of Eregion its centerpiece. Its river-diversion plan gives the battle a strong visual hook, while the episode’s split focus between Elves and Dwarves creates a more debatable character storyline. The result is a large-scale, consequential installment whose battle craft lands more cleanly than all of its dramatic timing.

The immediate crisis is Eregion’s siege. The official episode listings summarize the conflict as Sauron taking control of the city’s forces while the Uruks try to divert the river by destroying the cliff around Eregion. How well does the siege work?
The episode’s clearest strength is the battle’s central tactical idea: diverting the river by breaking the cliff. Den of Geek treats the sequence as the season’s major battle set piece, and the plan gives the assault a concrete objective beyond spectacle. It also creates a visible connection between the geography of Eregion and its vulnerability: the city’s danger is not only the force at its gates, but the landscape being turned against it.

Den of Geek compares the tactic with the Dambusters mission and points to echoes of Tolkien’s river imagery. These are the reviewer’s interpretive comparisons, not evidence that the episode directly adapts a particular historical operation or passage. Read that way, the episode’s Tolkien resonance comes through as atmosphere and motif rather than a claim of one-to-one adaptation. Den of Geek’s review.
Does the Dwarven storyline keep pace?
The episode also carries the Dwarven plot alongside the siege, and that shift in focus is where the drama is less assured. In Forbes, Erik Kain praised the installment overall, calling it “The Best Episode Of The Series So Far” in his headline, but argued that the Seven Rings’ timing relative to Eregion’s fall and the speed of Durin III’s corruption make the Dwarven material feel rushed. That is one critic’s reading, rather than a settled verdict, but it identifies the episode’s central pacing trade-off: the siege has a clear physical progression, while the character turn has less room to unfold. Is Season 2, Episode 7 good?
The available critical response is positive, though it should be read as a snapshot rather than a comprehensive audience verdict. Rotten Tomatoes showed 100% from 12 critic reviews and an average rating of 8.40/10 among rated reviews when accessed October 8, 2026. The score can change as reviews are added, and it represents critics—not viewers. Viewers more invested in the Dwarves may be less convinced by how quickly Durin III’s arc moves. The difference between those reactions is less about whether the episode matters to the season than about which of its two major threads feels most complete.

How much Tolkien background do you need?
No book knowledge is necessary to follow the episode’s basic conflict: Eregion is under siege, and the river-diversion plan makes the threat legible on screen.
