Spoilers for Stephen King’s novel and the 2025 film. The novel ends with Garraty as the last walker, but its apparent victory offers no relief: he keeps moving toward a dark figure. The film changes the winner and the final act. Garraty gives up his place so McVries can win; McVries kills the Major with the gun he wished for, then walks away. The film makes resistance more concrete, but leaves McVries’s future unresolved.

How does Stephen King’s novel end?

The last three walkers are Garraty, McVries, and Stebbins. McVries voluntarily gives up, and Stebbins then collapses, leaving Garraty the winner. But the novel offers no conventional celebration or clear sense of escape: Garraty continues toward a dark figure and runs.

The closing image does not establish whether the figure is real, what it means, or whether Garraty can recover. It is reasonable to read his continued movement as evidence that the contest has broken something in him, but that is an interpretation, not a diagnosis stated by the novel. TIME and TheWrap describe the book’s unsettling final image.

How does the 2025 film end?

The movie also reaches a final three of Garraty, McVries, and Stebbins, but changes how the last places are decided. Stebbins chooses to stop. When Garraty and McVries are the remaining walkers, Garraty gives up his place so McVries can win. McVries uses his winner’s wish to get a gun, kills the Major, and walks away. The film resolves who wins and shows an immediate act of rebellion; it does not reveal what happens to McVries afterward. TIME and TheWrap report the ending changes.

Why the contest rules matter

The numbers belong to different versions of the story. They are fictional rules, not real-world statistics.

Version Walkers Required pace Source
Novel 100 4 miles per hour GamesRadar+, 2025
2025 film 50 3 miles per hour TIME, 2025; GamesRadar+, 2025

In the film, the young men must keep walking, armed guards shoot those who cannot continue, and the winner receives a wish, according to TIME’s account. Those stakes help explain why a winner’s wish can become a weapon against the contest’s authority.

What do the different endings mean?

The novel: winning does not mean getting free

Garraty technically wins, yet his continued movement toward the dark figure makes the victory feel hollow. The gap between receiving the prize and escaping the Walk is the source of the ending’s bleakness. TIME reports that King described the story as brutal and hopeless and acknowledged that the Vietnam War was on his mind, while saying he had not consciously set out to write an allegory. That context can inform a reading, but it does not establish one definitive allegorical meaning.

The film: connection becomes resistance

The film makes Garraty’s bond with McVries decisive: Garraty’s sacrifice allows McVries to win, and McVries turns the wish into a direct attack on the Major. TIME quotes director Francis Lawrence describing that relationship as central: “To me, that’s what the whole thing is about. The whole thing is about [Garraty and McVries] bonding, and kind of falling in love in a weird way.” The bracketed words are TIME’s editorial clarification. This supports a reading focused on connection and resistance, not a claim that the movie ends happily; McVries walks into the night, and his fate remains unknown.

Why did the screenwriter change the ending?

Screenwriter JT Mollner explained the adaptation choice in a GamesRadar+ interview: “And the goal was to make these changes without pissing off constant readers, because we wanted to keep the DNA but also put something in that would surprise people who read the book, because why have the exact same experience twice?” The interview identifies Mollner as the film’s screenwriter and reports that Stephen King approved the ending.
