The Late Show with Stephen Colbert is not returning: CBS ended the series with its final broadcast on May 21, 2026. John Oliver appeared during the show’s final stretch as part of a reunion of the Strike Force Five hosts—not as a guest on a new season.
Did The Late Show with Stephen Colbert return?
No. CBS announced in July 2025 that the program would end, and the final episode aired on May 21, 2026. The late-season appearances by John Oliver and other late-night hosts were part of the show’s closing run, not a revival or new episode order. The Associated Press confirmed the finale after it aired.
Why did John Oliver appear?
Oliver joined Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, and Seth Meyers for a reunion with Colbert. The five hosts had worked together on the Strike Force Five podcast, created during the 2023 writers’ and actors’ strikes. CBS News identified the reunion as part of the program’s final-week guest activity. CBS News’s finale preview describes that context.
The finale also brought Paul McCartney onstage with Colbert. The Associated Press reported that McCartney joined him for the final broadcast and performed with him.

When was the final episode, and how long did the show run?
The final broadcast aired May 21, 2026. The Late Show franchise spanned 33 years, while Colbert hosted for 11 seasons. During the finale, Colbert cited more than 1,800 episodes, according to the Associated Press. CBS News reported that CBS described the program as late night’s No. 1 show for nine consecutive seasons; that ranking is the network’s claim.
Why did CBS cancel the show?
CBS and Paramount described the cancellation as a financial decision, citing the challenging economics of late night. In the Associated Press’s report on the July 2025 announcement, executives said: “It is purely a financial decision against a challenging backdrop in late night. It is not related in any way to the show’s performance, content or other matters happening at Paramount.”

The timing prompted some observers to question that explanation after Colbert criticized Paramount’s settlement with Donald Trump, the Associated Press reported. That skepticism is a reported interpretation, not proof that political considerations caused the cancellation. Colbert said at the time: “It’s the end of ‘The Late Show’ on CBS. I’m not being replaced. This is all just going away.”
