Former Graceland cook and maid Nancy Rooks recalled that Elvis Presley had gained “quite a bit of weight” by the summer of 1977. She described rich meals and said staff tried, unsuccessfully, to put him on a diet. Her account offers a glimpse of his household routines, but it does not establish that food alone caused his weight gain. Other retrospective accounts pointed to illness and medication as possible contributors.
What Nancy Rooks said about Elvis’s weight
Rooks told interviewer Gary James that Presley had gained “quite a bit of weight” by summer 1977. In the same interview, she recalled preparing meals that included three or four eggs with cheese, onions and stuffing, as well as a pound of bacon fried dry because that was how Presley liked it. She also said, “We would try to put him on a diet, but he wouldn’t let us.” Her interview was published by Elvis.com.au on June 3, 2023; the page says she was hired at Graceland in May 1967 and worked as a cook and maid until his death in August 1977.
Those quantities are Rooks’s recollections of particular meals, not a daily food log or a measurement of Presley’s weight. She also described his irregular routine: he might eat late after returning from a movie and sleep through much of the morning. Together, those details suggest the household habits she remembered, but they cannot prove what caused a change in his body weight.
What other accounts attributed to illness and medication
Marty Lacker’s account
In a 2005 CNN interview, associate Marty Lacker said Presley’s late weight gain came in his final year and had more to do with bodily illnesses than anything else, while adding that pills contributed. That is Lacker’s retrospective assessment, not a clinical finding established by the interview transcript. Read the CNN transcript.

George Nichopoulos’s account
Physician George Nichopoulos later described a colon complaint that he said caused Presley’s abdomen to enlarge. He also recalled a weight-loss attempt involving prolonged sleep and liquids during which Presley gained ten pounds. These are Nichopoulos’s retrospective statements; the interview page does not make its original publication date clear, and the figure should not be treated as an independently verified account of Presley’s overall weight change. Read the interview reproduced by Elvis.com.au.
A 2010 ElvisNews.com report also relayed Nichopoulos’s account of constipation and bowel movements affecting Presley’s appearance. It is secondary reporting, not a substitute for contemporaneous medical documentation. Read the report.

What the accounts can—and cannot—establish
| Speaker or source | What the account says | What it establishes |
|---|---|---|
| Nancy Rooks, former Graceland cook and maid | Presley had gained quite a bit by summer 1977; she recalled rich meals, resistance to dieting and an irregular routine. | Her recollection of household meals and habits, not a measured weight history or proof of a sole cause. |
| Marty Lacker, interviewed by CNN in 2005 | He associated the late gain chiefly with bodily illness and also cited pills. | Lacker’s retrospective opinion, not a clinical determination. |
| George Nichopoulos, in a retrospective interview | He attributed an enlarged abdomen to a colon complaint and recalled a ten-pound gain during a particular weight-loss attempt. | Nichopoulos’s account; the cited page does not supply contemporaneous records to independently verify the claims. |
These accounts address different things: Rooks recalled food and daily life, while Lacker and Nichopoulos offered explanations involving health and medication. No contemporaneous clinical record is presented in these sources, and none settles the cause or quantifies how much each factor contributed. Mary Jenkins Langston, another cook, described different favorite foods and cooking practices in a 2000 Irish Times account, a reminder that staff recollections need not describe every meal or routine. Readers interested in the household food rather than the medical question can look for The Presley Family Cookbook, identified in Rooks’s interview as co-authored by Nancy Rooks and Vester Presley and based on recipes used for the Presley family. It may offer culinary context, but it is not medical evidence about Presley’s weight.
