Actor Isabela Merced says the episode’s changes from The Last of Us Part II sharpen the uncertainty of that exchange and give Dina’s choices more emotional context.
What is Dina’s big reveal in “Day One”?
After Ellie is bitten while protecting Dina, Ellie explains that she is immune. Dina has to decide whether to believe her. The conversation leads to Dina’s own disclosure: she is pregnant with Jesse’s child. TheWrap’s May 4, 2025 interview with Merced places both revelations at the end of the pair’s first day in Seattle.
Merced described Dina discovering the pregnancy after she had already set out on the journey. In her reading, Dina’s decision to continue is not blind obedience: devotion to Ellie is part of it, alongside Dina’s own reasons for being there. That is Merced’s interpretation of the character, rather than a single explanation stated by the episode. TheWrap’s interview with Isabela Merced.
How does Merced read Dina’s feelings for Ellie and Jesse?
Merced describes Dina’s feelings for Jesse as genuine even as Dina struggles to understand what she feels for Ellie. In her account, Dina grew up without the language or community context to make sense of bisexuality. Merced has said Dina does not know the word “bisexual,” and that the characters misunderstand the rainbow flags they encounter in Seattle. This is the actor’s interpretation; it should not be mistaken for the show assigning a label to every part of Dina’s identity.

Merced also connects Dina’s uncertainty to her mother’s rejection, which she says left Dina feeling stuck. A.V. Club’s interview with Merced discusses that reading, while Vanity Fair’s interview addresses Dina’s conflicted feelings about Jesse and Ellie.
Why does “Take on Me” carry more than romantic meaning?
The episode recreates Ellie’s “Take on Me” serenade from the game, but Merced reads Dina’s reaction as layered: joy and love sit alongside fear and grief for Joel. She says Joel taught Dina guitar and passed along jokes and values, helping shape Dina’s affection for Ellie. Merced also sees Dina as frightened by how deep those feelings have become.

As Merced put it, “A lot of the love Dina has for Ellie is thanks to Joel.” In that interpretation, the song is not a break from the story’s grief: Joel’s influence is part of what makes the moment intimate and painful for Dina. TheWrap interview, May 4, 2025.

The immunity reveal is staged differently
In The Last of Us Part II, Ellie’s immunity comes out after she breathes spores while Dina wears a mask. The series has no spores: Ellie is bitten while protecting Dina, then has to tell Dina she is immune. Merced said the altered setup lets the actors play the uncertainty on their faces and makes Dina’s decision to trust Ellie immediate. A.V. Club and TheWrap discuss the change.
The relationship payoff arrives later in the series
Director Kate Herron told the Los Angeles Times on May 4, 2025 that she liked moving the relationship moment later in the season. The delay, she said, could make it more impactful and surprising for viewers unfamiliar with the game.

Dina is present for Joel’s death in the series
In the game, Dina is not there when Joel dies; the television series puts her there. Merced called the choice smart because the show had already established a relationship between Dina and Joel. In her view, that history gives Dina another reason to seek revenge and makes her feel more fully developed. Vanity Fair’s interview with Merced.
Game mechanics become television action
The subway sequence carries over gameplay-like actions, including crouching and counting infected, but the series turns them into performance and suspense rather than player-controlled mechanics. Merced has said she watched scenes from the game for specificity and respected Shannon Woodward’s work while making her own choices as Dina. She praised the restructuring for giving her more to play. TheWrap, Sky Atlantic and GQ cover aspects of her approach and the adaptation.
