HBO’s first official look at Kaitlyn Dever as Abby arrived in a season-two teaser released on September 26, 2024. The 1-minute-57-second video moves between Joel and Ellie, new characters including Dina and Jesse, and a snowy sequence in which Abby is pursued by infected, according to TheWrap.
What happens in the first-look teaser?
The teaser opens with Catherine O’Hara’s guest character pressing Joel, played by Pedro Pascal, to say what he did. TheWrap reported that her character’s role had not been disclosed when the teaser was released. O’Hara tells him, “You can’t heal something unless you’re brave enough to say it out loud.”
From there, the video cuts among scenes associated with The Last of Us: Part II: Joel teaching Ellie guitar, Abby running from infected in the snow, and Ellie playing guitar for Dina. Pearl Jam’s “Future Days” plays over the footage, TheWrap reported. These are images the outlet connects to the game; they do not establish that the television adaptation will reproduce those scenes exactly.
Who appears, and who plays Abby?
Kaitlyn Dever plays Abby, while Isabela Merced plays Dina. HBO’s cast announcement also names Young Mazino as Jesse, Jeffrey Wright as Isaac, Ariela Barer as Mel, Tati Gabrielle as Nora, Spencer Lord as Owen, and Danny Ramirez as Manny. Catherine O’Hara guest stars. Returning cast members include Pedro Pascal as Joel, Bella Ramsey as Ellie, Gabriel Luna as Tommy, and Rutina Wesley as Maria, according to HBO’s season-two announcement.

How the September teaser differs from the later release update
The September 26, 2024 video was the first official season-two teaser and introduced Abby alongside the season’s imagery. It was not an announcement of a premiere date. HBO’s initial announcement said the season would debut in 2025; a separate teaser released January 7, 2025, announced an April premiere month, as The Independent reported.

What the footage signals about the adaptation
HBO describes The Last of Us as based on Naughty Dog’s video game franchise developed for PlayStation consoles. TheWrap connects scenes in the teaser to the sequel, The Last of Us: Part II, and reports that season two is set five years later, with Joel and Ellie’s past pulling them into conflict in a more dangerous world. The teaser offers a glimpse of that adaptation, not a full account of its plot.

HBO credits Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann as writers and executive producers. The series is co-produced with Sony Pictures Television, with PlayStation Productions and Naughty Dog among its production companies, according to HBO’s announcement.

TheWrap reported that the teaser drew 158 million global views across platforms during its first three days, citing HBO and Max in 2024. That figure refers to the reported trailer-view total for that specific three-day period.
