The biggest change is when the story explains Abby: the game withholds much of her context, while the series gives viewers her motivation near the beginning. Across the season, the adaptation also reshapes chronology, changes who takes part in certain events, and adds relationship material to make the game’s story work as television.
How Season 2 adapts the game
Season 2 is based on Naughty Dog’s The Last of Us Part II, but it does not reproduce the game’s structure beat for beat. The source game controls what the player knows through its shifts in character and perspective. A television series has a different task: viewers watch those shifts from outside, and they may wait years between seasons.
That difference matters most in the order the show provides context. Other changes—such as altered patrol pairings or expanded scenes from Ellie and Joel’s history—are more local adjustments to how particular events reach the screen.
Abby’s motivation is revealed much earlier
In Part II, players first encounter Abby without immediately receiving the full context for her actions. The game later shifts perspective, changing how players understand the conflict. Season 2 introduces Abby’s motivation near the start, so viewers have that context before the game would have supplied it.

Neil Druckmann explained that asking a television audience to wait through the gap between seasons for essential context did not feel right. The change alters the audience’s alignment: the show reduces the early mystery around Abby and invites viewers to consider the conflict with more information from the outset. It does not remove the conflict; it changes when viewers can interpret it.
The show reshapes chronology and perspective
Co-creator and showrunner Craig Mazin said the season would not follow the game’s timeline exactly. The adaptation adjusts when material appears and how long viewers remain without context, rather than simply transferring the player’s experience to the screen.

Mazin described additions as part of that adaptation process: “Anything that you see in that episode that you didn’t see in the game is original to the show, and it was just part of the adaptive process that Neil [Druckmann, co-showrunner] and I go through where we’re looking for things to do.” The series retains the game’s perspective design as a meaningful reference, but changes the timing and presentation to suit television.
Patrols and Seattle events give characters different roles
Some changes are specific to who accompanies whom or who performs an action. TheWrap’s episode comparison reports that the show pairs Dina with Joel on patrol and Ellie with Jesse, switching the game’s patrol pairings. It also reports that Jesse saves Ellie and Dina from Stalkers in Seattle, giving him a rescue role different from the one he has in the game.

These adjustments show how a screen version can preserve the broad destination of a sequence while redistributing presence and action. The changes affect the scene’s immediate relationships and tension without making every altered beat a new story direction.
Added relationship material expands Ellie and Joel’s history
The show dramatizes Eugene-related material, giving viewers a direct encounter with a character they only hear about in the game. TIME notes that the player never encounters Eugene directly in Part II. Bringing this material on screen adds context around Ellie and Joel’s relationship, rather than merely repeating information the game already stages in the same way.

The season also uses the birthday museum flashback, a memorable sequence from the game, in the episode-six script discussed by the Television Academy. The adaptation can give this shared history a different place and shape within its episodic structure. These additions expand the relationship material, but do not by themselves establish a different ultimate motivation for either character.

The distinction to keep in mind is scale: Abby’s early context changes the season’s overall reveal order, while the patrol and rescue changes alter particular scenes. Added relationship material gives the adaptation more ways to place Ellie and Joel’s past within the present-day story.
