Spoilers for Season 2, Episode 1, “Future Days.” Five years after Season 1, Ellie and Joel are living in Jackson, but the truth about the hospital still stands between them. The premiere follows Ellie’s expanding life in the settlement, Joel’s attempts to reach her, and the arrival of Abby and her companions—signs that the past is not finished with them.
What happens in The Last of Us Season 2 premiere?
“Future Days” returns to the story five years after the events of Season 1. Jackson is no longer just a refuge on the characters’ route; it is a working community, with routines and relationships that have grown around Ellie and Joel. The time jump is apparent in Ellie’s age and in the life she has begun to build there.
That new stability does not mean the central relationship has healed. Ellie remains troubled by Joel’s account of what happened at the hospital, while he tries to reconnect through ordinary gestures. At the same time, the premiere introduces Abby and her companions, putting a new source of tension on the horizon without resolving what their arrival will mean.
Why is Ellie upset with Joel?
Ellie suspects Joel lied about the hospital events that ended Season 1. The premiere keeps that unresolved truth at the center of their relationship: Joel makes efforts to care for her, including offering to repair her guitar, but Ellie is guarded rather than reassured. His gestures show that he wants to restore their closeness; they do not settle the question she is carrying.

How Ellie’s life in Jackson is changing
Ellie’s world is no longer defined only by Joel. Her closeness with Dina gives the episode another important relationship to follow, and it suggests the possibility of romance. That connection gives Ellie room for a life and choices of her own, even as the unresolved conflict with Joel continues.

Who is Abby in the premiere?
Abby and her companions appear early, bringing the consequences of Joel’s actions in the Season 1 finale into the new season. The premiere signals that they matter to the story, but it does not require viewers to know later events to understand the setup. Their presence adds pressure to a story that has already reopened the question of what Joel did and what it cost.
What does “Future Days” mean?
“Future Days” is the title of a Pearl Jam song associated with Joel and Ellie in The Last of Us Part II. The episode’s title is an allusion; viewers do not need to know the song or the game to follow the television story. It can also sound like a warning about what lies ahead for the characters, but that is an interpretation of the title, not a confirmed plot explanation.

How the premiere differs from The Last of Us Part II
Season 2 adapts The Last of Us Part II, but the television version changes the timing of information. Sky and Vanity Fair note that the show introduces Abby and her motives earlier than the game’s initial presentation. That shift changes what viewers know and when; it does not make the game necessary to understand the episode.
A useful comparison focuses on three aspects:
- Timing: when the audience learns about Abby, her history, and her objective.
- Character emphasis: how the episode divides attention among Joel, Ellie, Dina, and Abby.
- Pacing and format: how Jackson’s daily life and the five-year gap are conveyed in television scenes compared with the game’s structure.
For readers who want to make that comparison, HBO describes the series as based on Naughty Dog’s video-game franchise. The relevant source material is The Last of Us Part II Remastered for PlayStation 5. Comparing the game may reveal story information beyond this episode, so approach it as a separate, spoiler-bearing experience.

A deliberate setup for the season
The premiere spends its time reintroducing the world and establishing pressure rather than delivering an action-heavy continuation. The Ringer frames its dangers broadly as infected people and human beings; the episode’s Jackson scenes give the story room to show what the characters might lose. Its main work is groundwork: Ellie and Joel’s fracture remains open, Ellie has connections beyond him, and Abby’s arrival points toward trouble ahead.
HBO announced that Season 2 would premiere on April 13, 2025, as a seven-episode season. The official announcement gives the season’s original release details. HBO’s companion podcast also lists a discussion of “Episode 1 – ‘Future Days’” with host Troy Baker and showrunners Craig Mazin and Neil Druckmann: the episode listing.
