The Korean Black Eyes is a documentary by Kim Daehyun about Kitty and the Korean girl band she formed in Bangkok in 1971. Festival records confirm screenings in 2023, but the official sources reviewed do not establish a November release date or a current streaming, theatrical, or retail option.
What is The Korean Black Eyes about?
The film follows Kitty (Jun-im Lim), who was at the center of All Stars as a third-year high-school student. The festival synopsis says All Stars formed in 1966 and left Korea expecting to perform in Southeast Asia before playing for troops in Vietnam. In Bangkok in 1971, Kitty formed the five-member Korean Black Eyes.
According to the festival descriptions, the band toured the Middle East and Africa, including Egypt and Nigeria, reached Spain in 1973, and recorded in Portugal. The group later moved into Northern Europe after a Swedish manager suggested the move. These details come from program synopses, rather than independent historical studies. Why tell the band’s story now?
Seoul Independent Film Festival presents the documentary as a recovery of Korean women musicians whose careers have been left out of familiar K-pop histories. Director Kim Daehyun says he encountered less-documented women musicians while making Try to Remember, then contacted Korean Black Eyes members to tell their story. SIFF credits Kim as director, producer, and screenwriter; the Korean Film Council’s KoBiz database lists him as director and producer and names INDELINE as the production company. What happened to the band after its touring years?
SIFF frames the film around what choices the five members made after their years on the road and where they are now. The official program pages establish the band’s touring chronology, but do not fully document each member’s later life independently.
In a Royal Free London profile published on 9 November 2023, Kitty Junim McLaughlin recalled: “We toured 28 different countries including concerts throughout Africa, the Middle East and Europe.” That is Kitty’s recollection as reported by the hospital, not an independently verified count. The profile also reports that she was filmed with her surgeon for the documentary and that health treatment kept her from its opening night. Royal Free London profile

When was it released, and where can you watch it?
The documented public screenings are festival presentations in 2023: Seoul Independent Film Festival listed the film in its feature showcase, and the Jecheon International Music & Film Festival (JIMFF) catalog identifies it as a Korean documentary presented on DCP. Those records establish festival history, not ongoing access. The KoBiz entry has no release date, and the official sources reviewed do not confirm a November release or a current streaming, theatrical, or physical-media option.
