The caper around them is less convincing, with a plot that reviewers often found short on intrigue and momentum. The film makes a persuasive case for seeing the actors together again, even if it does not establish that another collaboration is planned.
What is The Instigators about?
Directed by Doug Liman and written by Chuck MacLean and Casey Affleck, The Instigators pairs Damon as Rory, a desperate father, with Affleck as Cobby, an ex-con. They reluctantly join a scheme to rob a corrupt politician, but the job goes wrong and turns into a chaotic escape. Rory’s therapist, played by Hong Chau, gets caught up in their getaway. Apple’s announcement describes the setup as a reluctant partnership that spirals after the botched robbery.

The film is set and was made in Boston. Its ensemble includes Michael Stuhlbarg, Paul Walter Hauser, Ving Rhames, Alfred Molina, Toby Jones, Jack Harlow and Ron Perlman. The US Apple listing gives the runtime as 1 hour 41 minutes. Apple TV’s US listing provides the runtime and cast details.
Are Damon and Affleck good together?
Yes. Their contrast is the film’s clearest advantage: Damon’s anxious, burdened Rory plays well against Affleck’s more laconic Cobby. The humor often comes from the friction between them rather than from elaborate punchlines, giving the pair room to develop a believable, exasperated rhythm. The consensus at Rotten Tomatoes also singled out their “knucklehead rapport” as a source of charm, even while faulting the rest of the caper. Rotten Tomatoes’ release page carries that consensus.

#1 Best Overall
The Boston setting adds specificity, and the film’s collaborative production appears to have suited its local, ensemble feel. Liman told the Associated Press, “I was suddenly being parachuted into someone else’s family,” describing his position as an outsider joining the Damons and Afflecks in their Boston milieu. The AP also reported that the cast and filmmakers actively exchanged ideas during production. The AP report gives that account.
Where does the film fall short?
The same loose, laid-back approach that lets the leads riff can leave the story feeling slack. The central robbery gives the movie a clear engine, but the getaway does not always build enough suspense or comic escalation to make the twists land with force. Rotten Tomatoes’ consensus identifies a “lack of intrigue and pulse”; that is a useful description of the main reservation, not a claim that every scene or review reaches the same conclusion.
Rank #2
Critics were mixed overall. In the release-page snapshots accessed in 2026, Rotten Tomatoes showed a 41% Tomatometer from 157 critic reviews and a 56% Popcornmeter from 500-plus audience ratings. Metacritic listed 48/100 from 38 critic reviews, classifying the result as “Mixed or Average.” These are changeable aggregator snapshots, not box-office, viewership or survey figures. Positive reviews highlighted the cast, script, energy and old-school feel; less enthusiastic ones found the film slight, slack or underpowered. Metacritic’s film page lists its critic score and review classification.
Does the mix of comedy, action and character work?
It works best as a two-hander with a crime plot attached. The action supplies movement and the Boston streets give the escape a grounded setting, while Rory’s troubles and his therapist’s involvement add a human counterweight to the criminal scheme. But the film’s comic exchanges and character beats are more consistently engaging than its mechanics as a caper. If a tightly plotted heist with rising stakes is the priority, the film may feel underpowered; if the draw is watching two sharply contrasting performers trade irritation and reluctant loyalty, it has more to offer.
Rank #3
Producer Kevin J. Walsh described the film to the AP as a “throwback” in the vein of Midnight Run. That comparison captures an intended old-school buddy-caper flavor, but it is Walsh’s characterization rather than a guarantee that the movie sustains that model’s pace or tension. The AP interview includes his comparison.

Yes. The Instigators does not make every part of its story click, but it shows that Damon and Affleck can carry a film through personality, timing and an appealing mismatch in temperament. Their partnership is a stronger reason to return to this movie than the robbery itself. That is a recommendation based on what works here, not a report that a sequel or another joint project has been confirmed.
