Evelyn Hernandez disappeared from San Francisco in 2002 with her five-year-old son, Alex. Months later, investigators identified part of her torso, recovered from the Bay, as hers; Alex has never been found. Police treated her death as a homicide, but the public record cited here establishes neither an arrest nor a solved case. The label “the Other Laci Peterson” reflects a media comparison—not evidence that the two cases were connected.
Who was Evelyn Hernandez?
Hernandez was 24, a single mother, and pregnant with her second child when she disappeared. Her disappearance came close to the reported due date of that pregnancy. The San Francisco Chronicle’s September 2002 report described her as disappearing with her five-year-old son, Alex. The California Department of Justice’s missing-person profile for Alex records him as last seen with his mother on April 30, 2002; the Chronicle dates their disappearance to May 1. The available accounts therefore differ by a day.
What happened to Evelyn and Alex?
Disappearance and recovery
On July 24, 2002, part of a woman’s torso and maternity clothing were found in San Francisco Bay near the Embarcadero and Folsom Street. On September 4, the Chronicle reported that police had identified the remains as Hernandez’s through DNA comparison with material from her apartment. The reporting establishes recovery of part of her torso, not her complete remains.
What investigators said
At the time of the identification, police said Alex had not been found and no arrest had been made. They treated Hernandez’s case as a homicide investigation. A June 2003 Chronicle report said a cause of death had not been established at that time; the cited public accounts do not establish a cause or mechanism of death, an arrest, or a resolution.

Alex’s status
Alex remains listed as missing by the California DOJ, with the San Francisco Police Department identified as the reporting agency. SFPD’s general homicide and cold-case page describes its cold-case database and provides investigator and anonymous-tip contacts. That department-wide page does not itself provide a Hernandez-specific status update or confirm reward eligibility for this case.
Why is the case called “the Other Laci Peterson”?
The nickname comes from broad similarities noted in public coverage: both women were pregnant when they disappeared in California in 2002, and their cases drew national attention. The comparison can help explain the media context, but it should not be mistaken for a proven investigative link.

The timelines were distinct. Hernandez disappeared in spring 2002; part of her torso was found in July and identified that September. Laci Peterson disappeared in December 2002. The Chronicle’s timeline of the Laci Peterson case dates the recovery of the baby’s body to April 13, 2003, the woman’s body to April 14, and their identification to April 18.

The cited contemporaneous record does not establish a connection. In June and July 2003, Scott Peterson’s defense sought materials from the Hernandez investigation while proposing a possible link to the separate Laci Peterson case. San Francisco police disputed that connection. Judge Al Girolami ruled that the defense could receive Hernandez’s autopsy report and photographs, but not police files. In the Chronicle’s July 10, 2003 report, Girolami characterized the proposed link as “highly speculative.” Similarities in circumstances do not establish a common perpetrator.
