What happened to The Holdovers on Netflix?
The original warning about The Holdovers came from a particularly awkward piece of timing: the film was reportedly scheduled to leave Netflix on December 15, 2025, just as viewers were beginning to look for Christmas movies. That date was a past deadline, not a new removal date for December 2026.

Netflix availability is determined by licensing agreements and can vary by country. When a title is approaching the end of its Netflix window, the service may display a Last day to watch on Netflix
notice during the final month. The notice is the best confirmation for an individual account and region; a departure date reported for one country should not automatically be treated as universal.
In practical terms, Netflix is no longer the service to rely on for The Holdovers in the United States. The film’s departure does not mean it has disappeared from legitimate viewing platforms.
Where to watch The Holdovers in the U.S. now
Availability checked August 13, 2026. A current U.S. listing identifies the following options:
- Streaming: Peacock Premium and Peacock Premium Plus.
- Digital purchase or rental: Amazon Video, Apple TV Store, and Fandango at Home.
These are listings at the time of the check, not a guarantee that the same services will carry the film indefinitely. Digital storefronts may show different rental periods, purchase formats, prices, or availability depending on location and account settings. If you are planning a specific movie night, confirm the title is still listed and check whether you are selecting a rental, a purchase, or a subscription-supported stream.

- From writer/director Nancy Meyers comes a romantic comedy about two women on opposite sides of the globe who swap houses only to discover that a change of address can really change their lives.
A Peacock listing may be the simplest route for viewers who already subscribe to an eligible plan. A digital rental can make more sense for a one-time viewing, while a digital purchase or physical edition is better suited to viewers who expect to return to the film every December.
Why The Holdovers already feels like a holiday classic
The Holdovers is a 2023 comedy-drama directed by Alexander Payne and written by David Hemingson. Paul Giamatti plays Paul Hunham, a difficult, deeply unhappy instructor at a New England boarding school who is left on campus during Christmas break to supervise students who have nowhere else to go.
What begins as an unwanted custodial assignment gradually becomes a three-person story. Hunham forms an unlikely bond with Angus Tully, a bright and troubled student played by Dominic Sessa, and with Mary Lamb, the school’s cook, played by Da’Vine Joy Randolph. Mary is grieving the death of her son, who was lost in Vietnam, adding another layer of sorrow to an already isolated holiday setting.
The film’s Christmas appeal is not based on cheerfulness alone. Its characters are lonely, angry, grieving, and often incapable of saying what they need. The confined snowy campus, empty dormitories, and long holiday break give the story the shape of a traditional seasonal movie, but the emotional experience is more bittersweet than sentimental. The eventual connection among the three central characters comes from shared vulnerability rather than a conveniently perfect holiday transformation.

1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsThat combination makes the film unusually well suited to repeat viewing. It offers the wintry atmosphere people expect from a Christmas movie while leaving room for sadness, resentment, class tension, grief, and humor. The holiday is the setting, but the real subject is the temporary family these isolated people create.
The awards helped establish its modern-classic reputation
The word classic
is an editorial judgment rather than an official classification, but The Holdovers has a stronger claim than most recent releases to becoming a recurring holiday favorite. It received five nominations at the 96th Academy Awards, including Best Picture, Best Actor for Paul Giamatti, Original Screenplay, and Film Editing.
Da’Vine Joy Randolph won the Oscar for Supporting Actress for her performance as Mary Lamb. That recognition matters to the film’s long-term reputation because Mary is not simply a supporting presence in the background: her grief and the film’s treatment of her give the Christmas story much of its emotional weight.
The movie is also recent enough to feel contemporary while using a setting and visual mood that recall older winter dramas. That balance helps explain why it can seem more established than a typical 2023 release. It has the familiarity of a seasonal tradition without pretending to be an old film.

Why buying a copy may be the best annual-rewatch option
Streaming is convenient, but a title’s presence on a subscription service is temporary by design. A film may arrive on one platform, leave months later, and then reappear somewhere else under a different subscription or rental arrangement. That is exactly the problem the Netflix departure created for viewers who had begun treating The Holdovers as part of their Christmas routine.
The official The Holdovers Blu-ray + DVD + Digital Collector’s Edition is therefore a practical alternative to chasing the film across services. Universal Pictures At Home also lists a DVD Collector’s Edition. The specific package, included format, retailer price, and stock status should be confirmed before purchase, but the existence of official physical editions gives viewers a way to preserve access beyond the next licensing change.
A disc is especially useful for households that rewatch the film every year, lend movies to family members, or do not want a subscription service to determine whether a seasonal favorite is available. It also avoids the uncertainty of discovering, on the night of a planned viewing, that a title has moved from streaming to rental or disappeared from a particular storefront.

- Check the current U.S. listing. Start with a streaming-availability guide or the services you already use. Treat the August 13, 2026 availability information above as time-sensitive.
- Compare the type of access. A subscription stream, a one-time rental, a digital purchase, and a disc solve different problems.
- Confirm your region. Streaming rights and digital storefront catalogs can differ outside the United States.
- Choose physical media for reliability. If The Holdovers is becoming a yearly tradition, an official Blu-ray or DVD reduces your dependence on future licensing decisions.
The Holdovers no longer has the Netflix countdown that made its original holiday warning so striking. But the underlying concern remains valid: a modern Christmas favorite can be temporarily unavailable wherever viewers expect to find it. For a one-off viewing, Peacock or a digital rental may be enough. For a film that has earned a place beside the annual holiday rewatches, owning a physical copy is the safer long-term plan.
