What is The Handmaid’s Tale spinoff called?
The series is called The Testaments, after Margaret Atwood’s novel of the same name. Hulu describes it as an evolution of The Handmaid’s Tale: a dramatic coming-of-age story set in Gilead, rather than simply another season centered on June Osborne. Hulu’s series page identifies the novel as its source.
What is The Testaments about?
The story shifts to a younger generation raised under Gilead’s rules. Agnes, played by Chase Infiniti, is June and Luke’s biological daughter. Raised in Gilead, she attends Aunt Lydia’s elite Wife School, where girls are prepared for the futures the regime has chosen for them. Daisy, played by Lucy Halliday, arrives from outside Gilead; her presence challenges Agnes’s understanding of the society around her. Aunt Lydia oversees the school.
The change in viewpoint is central to the spinoff. June’s story foregrounded resistance to Gilead; The Testaments follows young women coming of age inside its institutions. Creator Bruce Miller described the premise to the Associated Press as a story about teenage girls being told what they will become while having their adolescence taken from them. The Associated Press reported on the series and its cast on April 7, 2026.

How does it connect to The Handmaid’s Tale?
Disney+ UK describes the series as taking place four years after the fall of Boston in the final season of The Handmaid’s Tale. That is the television series’ timeline; it should not be confused with the novel’s timeline or its time jump. Hulu says the new show can be followed on its own, while watching the original offers more context about Gilead and returning characters.
Ann Dowd returns as Aunt Lydia. Elisabeth Moss also appears briefly as June, according to Hulu, and is an executive producer. The focus, however, is on Agnes and Daisy rather than a continuation built around June’s point of view.

When did The Testaments come out?
The Testaments premiered in April 2026. In the UK, Disney+ launched it on April 8 with three episodes, followed by weekly releases. Disney+ UK’s guide, revised June 24, 2026, listed all 10 episodes of the first season as available. Hulu’s official guide identifies Hulu as the US home of the series and says it premiered there in April. Disney+ UK’s guide to the series has the UK release details; check your local service catalogue because availability varies by territory.
Is The Testaments renewed for season 2?
Yes. Disney announced a second-season renewal on May 20, 2026. In its announcement, Disney reported more than 45 million hours streamed globally on Hulu and Disney+ “to date,” and said episode-eight views were up 76% compared with the premiere, based on one-day views. Those are company-reported figures tied to the announcement, not independent audience measurements. Disney’s renewal announcement includes the figures and production credits.

Disney+ UK’s guide, revised June 24, 2026, said a season-two release date had not been announced as of that date. No later confirmed premiere date or production schedule is established here, so treat the timing as unconfirmed rather than assuming a particular year.

Where can I watch The Testaments?
Hulu is the US home of the show; Disney+ carries it in the UK. The UK guide lists all 10 first-season episodes as available as of its June 24, 2026 revision. Streaming rights and catalogues vary by country, so check the service available in your territory for current access and episode listings.
Do I need to watch The Handmaid’s Tale first?
No. Hulu says The Testaments can stand on its own, so a newcomer can follow Agnes, Daisy, and the school without first watching the original. The earlier series adds context about how Gilead developed and why returning characters such as Aunt Lydia and June matter.
