Spain’s Supreme Court later upheld her four-year prison sentence, and she was expelled to Mexico in September 2024 after serving two years, with a seven-year ban on returning to Spain.
What happened at Restaurante Atrio?
On 27 October 2021, 45 bottles were stolen from the cellar of Restaurante Atrio in Cáceres, western Spain. Spain’s Ministry of the Interior estimated their combined value at €1,648,500. The ministry’s account described earlier visits to the restaurant as part of the planning.
The figure of €1,648,500 was the ministry’s estimate of the bottles’ value. It is separate from the €753,454 in compensation later ordered for the insurer.
Why was Priscila Lara Guevara arrested?
Spanish police reported that Guevara and Constantin Dumitru were located in Croatia and arrested there in July 2022, following cooperation between Spanish police and international and Croatian authorities. At the time, the arrests were in connection with the suspected theft; the later court rulings established the convictions.

What did Spain’s Supreme Court decide?
In January 2024, Spain’s Supreme Court upheld the convictions and sentences reported for both defendants: four years and six months in prison for Dumitru and four years for Guevara. The court also ordered them to pay the insurer €753,454 jointly and severally, meaning each was liable for the full amount if the other did not pay.
EL PAÍS quoted the court’s reasoning as saying the prosecution evidence was “overwhelming,” included direct and circumstantial evidence, and was solid and plural. The court added that the appellant’s arguments did not deprive that evidence of its force. This was the court’s assessment of the appeal, not a statement by Guevara.

Why was Guevara expelled to Mexico?
In September 2024, EL PAÍS reported that a court ordered Guevara expelled to Mexico after she had served two years of her four-year sentence. The order barred her from returning to Spain for seven years. This expulsion was a later development in the case, distinct from her arrest in Croatia in 2022 and the Supreme Court’s decision to uphold her conviction in January 2024.
