The reveal previewed the live-action reimagining of the 2002 animated film Lilo & Stitch, which Disney’s teaser listed for U.S. theaters on May 23, 2025—a release date that has passed.
When Disney revealed the live-action Stitch
Disney’s August 9, 2024 D23 event report said a first look at Stitch had been revealed “on social.” That wording places the reveal during the Disney Entertainment showcase but does not say the first look was shown in the room.
Which film the reveal previewed
The preview was for Lilo & Stitch, a live-action reimagining of Disney’s 2002 animated classic—not a separate new Stitch story. Disney’s official film feature describes a lonely Hawaiian girl and a fugitive alien who helps mend her broken family. Dean Fleischer Camp directed the movie; Jonathan Eirich and Dan Lin produced it.
Disney’s official teaser named May 23, 2025 as the U.S. theatrical release date. Its listed cast included Maia Kealoha, Sydney Elizebeth Agudong, Billy Magnussen, Tia Carrere, Hannah Waddingham, Chris Sanders, Courtney B. Vance, and Zach Galifianakis.

How the filmmakers described the adaptation
In a May 2025 Disney interview, director Dean Fleischer Camp said the team aimed to honor the original without copying it literally: “We tried to adapt it in a way that paid loving tribute to the original, but wasn’t a one-to-one literal translation.”
Producer Jonathan Eirich joked, “The headline is: Don’t Mess It Up,” then clarified that the film was not intended as a shot-for-shot remake. He said changes should be made thoughtfully and with love.

What Disney said about Stitch’s popularity
In a May 22, 2025 interview, David Greenbaum, President of Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios, said Stitch had grown 27-fold as a Disney Consumer Products brand over the five years before the interview. This is Disney’s reported figure; the interview does not provide a measurement methodology or independent audit.
