Meanwhile, the Russell family faces its own contest over authority. George is away in Arizona pursuing a railroad scheme linking New York, Chicago, and Los Angeles. A reported bank run brings him back, while Bertha presses forward with plans for Gladys’s future. (ELLE; HBO)
Why does Gladys run away?
Gladys is secretly seeing Billy Carlton, with help from her brother Larry and Mamie Fish. She believes George will keep his promise to let her marry for love. Bertha has a different plan: she is arranging a match with Hector, Duke of Buckingham, whose title and social standing matter to her ambitions for her daughter. Bertha also commissions John Singer Sargent to paint Gladys as part of presenting her to society. ELLE connects the portrait discussion to Sargent’s real painting “Lady with the Rose.” (ELLE; TV Insider)

When Bertha rejects Gladys’s hopes of marrying Billy and insists on the duke, Gladys packs and runs away. It is the premiere’s cliffhanger and a direct consequence of Bertha trying to control a choice Gladys sees as her own. (TVLine; TheWrap)
What is happening with Aurora and Charles Fane?
Charles tells Aurora that he has a mistress, Elsa Lipton, and wants a divorce so he can be with her. The revelation shocks Aurora and her family, opening a storyline about marriage, reputation, and the choices available to women in the world the series depicts. The episode’s entertainment coverage describes divorce as socially costly in that setting; it does not establish a complete account of the period’s law. (ELLE; TV Insider)
Creator Julian Fellowes told TVLine: “Divorce was becoming normal, but it was still very much disapproved of at the top end of society, and it was too expensive in most of the other parts of society.” He also described the season’s focus on the expectations surrounding marriage in the 1880s. These are Fellowes’s comments about the show’s setting, not a substitute for legal-history research. (TVLine)
