The Game is a compact psychological crime thriller built around a strong two-lead premise: a retired detective suspects his charming new neighbour may be connected to the unsolved case that still haunts him. Jason Watkins and Robson Green give the series its central pull, but critics disagree about whether its tension overcomes familiar, sometimes implausible plotting.
What is The Game about?
BritBox’s US listing describes a retired detective whose peace is disrupted when his new neighbour repeats a killer’s chilling phrase. The coincidence reopens an unsolved case and draws the men into suspicion and obsession. Huw Miller, the retired detective, is played by Jason Watkins; Robson Green plays Patrick Harbottle, the neighbour. The show’s hook is less a conventional investigation than a dangerous game of watching, testing and second-guessing one another.

BritBox lists the 2025 series as one season. The official listing also names Sunetra Sarker, Indy Lewis, Amber James, Jenny Rainsford, Amy Huberman and Simon Harrison in the cast, with Tom Grieves as writer, Toby Frow as director and Mike Benson as producer. BritBox’s US listing is the source for those details and the first season’s premise.
What works: the leads and the uneasy one-upmanship
The series depends on the contrast between Huw’s unresolved fear and Patrick’s approachable charm. That friction gives ordinary neighbourly encounters a second meaning: each can be read as harmless, manipulative or threatening. In an interview reproduced by Robson Green’s website, Watkins described the “cat and mouse dynamic” as “really good”; Green said the men are “almost stalking each other.” Those comments describe the actors’ view of the setup, rather than serving as a guarantee of how every viewer will respond. The reproduced interview carries the remarks.

The Killing Times’ review, published 17 May 2025, likewise singled out Watkins’s anxious, wounded characterization and Green’s shift between charm and menace. It found the show’s pulp-thriller energy effective as a short, one-night watch. That is the clearest case for the series: if performance-led tension and a brisk contest of suspicion matter more to you than procedural realism, the premise has a lot to work with.
Where the thriller divides critics
The central weakness identified by reviewers is not the hook but the plotting that has to sustain it. The Killing Times found familiar thriller devices, limited character depth across four episodes and unanswered questions about the antagonist’s motives. Forbes was substantially less forgiving in a review dated 28 January 2026, calling the plotting implausible and criticizing characters’ decisions and reliance on genre tropes. Those are critical judgments, not settled facts; together they point to the key viewing trade-off: how readily you accept contrivance in exchange for momentum and the leads’ performances.

Rotten Tomatoes displayed a 100% Tomatometer from five critic reviews and a 36% Popcornmeter from fewer than 50 audience ratings when captured in 2026. These are small, potentially changing samples, not a definitive consensus or a reliable prediction of an individual viewer’s reaction. Rotten Tomatoes’ title page shows the platform’s figures.
Is The Game worth watching?
Choose it for a short, tense cat-and-mouse story anchored by Watkins and Green, especially if you enjoy suspicion that turns everyday interactions into psychological contests. Be more cautious if implausible decisions, familiar serial-killer conventions or a lack of deeper character development quickly undermine a thriller for you. The disagreement between The Killing Times and Forbes captures that split better than a single score can: one sees slick, pulpy momentum; the other sees a promising idea undercut by its execution.

On 24 February 2026, UK broadcaster 5 announced a second series with Watkins and Green returning. Its announcement says the story is set a year after the first series: Huw is recovering after surviving a stabbing, while Patrick is behind bars. This is a commission and announced premise, not confirmation of a current streaming release. 5’s announcement provides those details.
