Its deeper resonance comes from Johnson’s earlier performance of the song in the 2016 reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II—a pointed connection to the games, where she played Ellie.
What song plays at the end of Season 2, Episode 2?
It is Ashley Johnson singing “Through the Valley,” not the original recording by Shawn James. James wrote and originally performed the song; Johnson’s cover is the version used in the episode’s credits, according to TheWrap’s report on the episode.

Why does “Through the Valley” have a connection to the games?
Johnson’s voice is already closely associated with Ellie for players: she voiced and performed the character in both The Last of Us games. Her rendition of “Through the Valley” also featured in the 2016 reveal trailer for The Last of Us Part II. The Season 2 episode therefore brings back a performance already tied to Ellie and the game series, rather than simply using a song that suits a somber ending.
What does the song’s placement mean?
The callback can make the credits feel like a bridge between the show’s present events and Ellie’s history in the games. That is an interpretation supported by the song’s documented connection to Johnson and the Part II trailer, not a confirmed explanation of the episode’s creative intent. The available reporting does not establish a specific statement from the creators explaining why they chose the song for this ending, so a more definitive symbolic reading would go beyond what is known.
