He gave Peg a ring and a golden rose as a commitment to continue their relationship and work out their future—not as an engagement.
What ABC previewed for the finale
ABC’s pre-air listing described a two-hour finale set in Antigua, where Mel’s family would meet the two remaining women, Peg and Cindy. The network also said Jesse Palmer would join Mel and the finalists in front of a studio audience to watch the final days unfold. Those details were part of ABC’s preview; they did not establish how the relationships would end.

Why Cindy left Mel
Cindy pressed Mel about his feelings and whether he could propose. He told her he was not ready and wanted more time for their relationship to develop. Cindy did not want to wait on that possibility, so she ended their date and left rather than continue without a clear commitment to marriage.

#1 Best Overall
During the live segment after the episode, Cindy said she was at peace with her decision and did not want to convince someone to love her. Her departure was her choice, not a rose-ceremony rejection by Mel.
Did Mel propose to Peg?
No. After Peg met Mel’s family and sons, Mel gave her a ring and the final golden rose. He described the ring as a commitment to love her and figure out what their future would hold. ABC7’s recap reported his words as: “This represents our commitment to love and to figure out our future and what our future holds.”

That was a commitment to keep building the relationship, not a request for Peg to marry him. ABC7 and TVLine both reported that Mel did not propose. In the live segment, Mel and Peg said they were in love while describing their relationship as still developing.
What were the finale’s “twists”?
- Cindy chose to leave: Mel’s answer that he was not ready to propose led her to end the date rather than wait.
- Peg was Mel’s final choice, but there was no engagement: He offered a ring and a commitment to continue their relationship, not a marriage proposal.
ABC’s accessible pre-air materials confirmed Palmer’s role in the studio but did not substantiate the exact “didn’t see coming” wording attached to the headline. It is best understood as promotional framing, not a verified direct quote from Palmer.
