Fans helped preserve the sound of early Doctor Who episodes on home reel-to-reel tape, while 16mm film copies made for overseas sales—and later recovered by collectors and archives—preserved some of the pictures. These were separate survival routes: one kept sound, the other images.
Why so many early Doctor Who pictures disappeared
The BBC made early Doctor Who episodes on studio videotape. For overseas sales, BBC Enterprises arranged 16mm film recordings, or telerecordings, that could be distributed to broadcasters abroad. After a UK transmission and the preparation of a sales print, the original videotape could be cleared and reused. The BBC’s account of the programme’s archive explains this practice and the later role of fans and collectors in recovering material: BBC: The missing episodes.
The system reflected immediate production and commercial needs, not a plan to preserve every broadcast indefinitely. When overseas sales declined and contracts ended, film copies could also be withdrawn and junked. Gaps widened because the BBC film library and its commercial arm each assumed the other held copies. The BBC sets out this recording and archive history here: BBC: Doctor Who and the missing episodes.
The scale became clear when the BBC checked its holdings in 1978: none of the 253 Hartnell- and Troughton-era episodes had an original videotape copy. The BBC’s historical account says the recovery effort later located 47 episodes scattered in its film library. These figures describe that historical search, not today’s number of missing episodes.

Two different ways the episodes survived
| Route | What it preserved | How it was made | Where surviving material turned up |
|---|---|---|---|
| Overseas 16mm copies | Pictures and sound on film | Telerecordings made for overseas sales | Broadcaster and institutional holdings abroad, and private collections |
| Fan recordings | Broadcast soundtracks | Off-air audio recorded at home on reel-to-reel tape | Fans’ personal collections, later shared with the BBC |
The distinction matters: a home audio recording could preserve dialogue and other broadcast sound, but it could not replace the missing picture. Conversely, a recovered film print could restore images. The BBC says soundtracks survive back to the first episodes through fans’ recordings. It also notes a separate exception: a fan filmed a few seconds of “The Reign of Terror” by pointing a home movie camera at a television screen. That brief footage is not the same thing as the audio reels or the overseas 16mm telerecordings. BBC: The missing episodes.
Why fans made reel-to-reel recordings
When pictures were not preserved, listeners’ recordings became an unintended audio archive. Fans Graham Strong and David Holman are among those credited with recording broadcasts off air. A 2026 account published by Loud And Clear Reviews says Strong brought four reels containing more than 100 episodes to the BBC in 1994. The BBC copied and restored the recordings; they were later used in audio releases and to add sound to mute 8mm footage. Those named details come from that secondary account: Loud And Clear Reviews: The fan recordings that saved Doctor Who.

The recordings did not restore the episodes as complete television programmes. They preserved the sound that fans could capture while watching, and later made it possible to hear stories whose original broadcast pictures were no longer available.
How missing film episodes came back
Some 16mm copies survived outside the BBC’s holdings. The BBC’s official history describes several important returns: “The Tomb of the Cybermen” came back in 1992; in 2013, Philip Morris found “The Enemy of the World” and “The Web of Fear” in Nigeria; and in March 2026, two episodes of “The Daleks’ Master Plan” were recovered from a private collector’s estate. The Associated Press reported on March 13, 2026, that the recovered “The Nightmare Begins” and “Devil’s Planet” were restored by BBC archivists. The report said 95 episodes remained missing at that time. That is a dated count, not a permanent total; further discoveries could change it. Associated Press: Two missing Doctor Who episodes found
Justin Smith, chair of Film is Fabulous! and cinema professor at De Montfort University, described the appeal of such discoveries to the Associated Press: “In some ways finding missing ‘Doctor Whos’ is the holy grail” of classic TV discoveries. Associated Press

Why preservation and access can conflict
Preserving fragile recordings is not simply a matter of keeping them on a shelf. A BBC committee interim report, quoted in the Loud And Clear Reviews article, put the tension this way: “Preservation and use are mutually incompatible; the greater the access given to any document, film or tape, the shorter its life is likely to be.” The statement captures why archives must balance access with the risk of wear to original materials.
