Dream has six siblings, not seven. In Neil Gaiman’s The Sandman, Dream—also known as Morpheus—is the third-born member of the Endless: a family of seven immortal personifications who embody fundamental forces of existence. From oldest to youngest, they are Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium.

This guide explains each sibling, the family’s metaphysical ancestry, their most important relationships, and the differences between the original DC/Vertigo comics and Netflix’s live-action adaptation. Spoilers follow for the comics and all of Netflix’s The Sandman, including Season 2.

The Endless family tree at a glance

The Endless are not an ordinary biological family. They are living embodiments of ideas, experiences, and conditions that shape existence. Each has a realm and a responsibility, and all seven names begin with the letter D. DC describes them as immortal personifications of abstract ideas and emotions in its official introduction to the Endless.

In canonical age order, from oldest to youngest, the family is:

  1. Destiny
  2. Death
  3. Dream
  4. Destruction
  5. Desire
  6. Despair
  7. Delirium, formerly Delight

Desire and Despair are twins. Delirium is the youngest. The family’s parental figures are Night and Time, whose relationship to the Endless is clarified in The Sandman: Overture. They are not additional Endless.

   ├── Death

   ├── Destruction
   ├── Desire ── twin ── Despair
   └── Delirium

The family tree is therefore metaphysical rather than biological. The Endless can appear human or humanoid, but they are not simply gods, superheroes, or unusually powerful mortals. They personify the forces that gods, mortals, and other beings experience.

Dream: the third-born Endless

Dream, also called Morpheus and the Sandman, rules the Dreaming. His domain includes dreams, nightmares, stories, and the imaginative worlds created during sleep and through fiction. He is the central character of the original comic series.

Dream’s traditional symbols are his helm, pouch of sand, and ruby. Although he is the best-known member of the family, he is not the eldest: Destiny and Death are both older than him, while Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium are younger.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Dream’s central weakness is his resistance to change. He treats duty, identity, and tradition as fixed obligations, even when circumstances have changed around him. Many of his conflicts with his siblings grow out of that rigidity. As DC’s character guide puts it, change is among the things Dream finds hardest to accept.

His closest family relationship is with Death, who loves him but is also willing to challenge his pride and poor decisions. In a clarification on his official FAQ, Neil Gaiman described their relationship as loving but nonsexual: Death is Dream’s sister, not his romantic partner. Read the clarification on Gaiman’s official Sandman FAQ.

Destiny: the eldest sibling

Destiny is the oldest of the Endless. He represents inevitability, order, and the total record of existence. He carries a huge chained book—often referred to as the Cosmic Log—containing the sum of all existence.

Destiny is not merely a fortune-teller predicting one possible future. His nature is bound up with the idea that events are already recorded. He is formal, detached, and seemingly incapable of spontaneity because certainty is central to what he embodies.

His age and temperament make him the sibling most associated with procedure. At the beginning of Season of Mists, Destiny calls the family meeting, establishing him as the organizer of formal family business. That does not make him Dream’s father, nor does it make him the king or supreme ruler of the Endless. He is Dream’s older brother.

Death: the second-born sibling

Death is the second-oldest Endless and the personification of death itself. Although she can resemble the traditional Grim Reaper, her personality is usually warm, funny, practical, and compassionate rather than terrifying.

Death is older than Dream and speaks to him with a directness that few others can match. She acts as his emotional counterweight: where Dream can become formal, proud, and trapped by duty, Death is more grounded and flexible. She is also one of the people most capable of making him confront the consequences of his choices.

Death has a special privilege within the family. According to DC’s official guide, she is the only Endless who may travel freely through the others’ realms without first requesting permission.

In Netflix’s adaptation, Death is played by Kirby Howell-Baptiste. The series presents her as Dream’s older and more emotionally sensible sister. She is not his twin; that common misunderstanding probably comes from her unusually close relationship with him.

Destruction: the Prodigal

Destruction is the fourth-born Endless and the family’s absent brother, known as the Prodigal. He embodies destruction, but his concept is broader than violence or annihilation. He is also connected with decay, transformation, progress, and the way creation can arise from destruction.

Roughly three hundred years before the events of Brief Lives, Destruction abandoned his realm and withdrew from active responsibility. He did not die, lose his powers, or stop being an Endless. He simply chose not to continue administering his function in the way the family expected.

His disappearance drives the central quest of Brief Lives. Delirium asks Dream to help search for their brother, and the journey reveals that Destruction left because he rejected responsibility for the destructive consequences of human and cosmic progress. He is the sibling most willing to accept that identities and responsibilities can change, making him an important thematic contrast to Dream.

Destruction is especially important to Delirium, who loves and misses him. In Netflix Season 2, he is played by Barry Sloane. The adaptation retains the basic comic premise: he left his realm centuries earlier and does not want to resume his former duties. Netflix’s Season 2 ending explainer discusses his continuing absence.

Desire: the androgynous younger sibling

Desire embodies wanting in its broadest sense: longing, attraction, ambition, appetite, fixation, and the urge to possess or achieve something. Desire is not limited to sexual attraction. Anything a person or being wants can fall within the concept.

Desire is Dream’s younger sibling and his most persistent rival. Their conflict involves personal history, but it is also philosophical. Desire sees Dream as proud, judgmental, and vulnerable to his own rigid sense of honor. Dream regards Desire as manipulative and dangerous.

One of Desire’s most important schemes attempts to exploit the rule that the Endless must not spill one another’s blood. Desire engineers circumstances that could force Dream to violate that prohibition, turning a family quarrel into a potentially catastrophic cosmic conflict.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Desire’s appearance is deliberately androgynous. The comics use masculine and feminine references, while Netflix uses they/them pronouns for the character, played by Mason Alexander Park. The adaptation’s approach is consistent with Desire’s deliberately fluid presentation.

Desire is also explicitly Despair’s twin. Desire is generally more expressive, witty, and active in family intrigues, but that does not make them older: the story establishes them as twins without creating a meaningful older-twin hierarchy.

Despair: Desire’s twin

Despair is the personification of hopelessness—the point at which hope has disappeared. She is Desire’s twin and Dream’s younger sister.

Despair is quieter and more severe than Desire, but she is not merely passive or powerless. The two sometimes act as co-conspirators. Their domains are connected but not identical: Desire is about wanting, while Despair is about the loss of hope.

The comics contain an important continuity complication: there were two versions of Despair. The later, familiar Despair is the current member of the Endless family. The earlier Despair is part of the mythology, but should not be counted as an additional present-day sibling. This is why lists claiming that there are eight current Endless are inaccurate.

Netflix focuses on the current Despair, played by Donna Preston. The show identifies her as Desire’s twin and Dream’s younger sister.

Delirium: the youngest, formerly Delight

Delirium is the youngest of the Endless. She represents madness, instability, fragmented perception, and a strange kind of insight that more orderly minds may not recognize.

Before becoming Delirium, she was Delight. These are not two separate siblings. Delight and Delirium are two states or identities of the same youngest Endless, so adding Delight to the family tree creates a false eighth member.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Delirium’s appearance, speech, and apparent logic shift unpredictably. However, her words are not simply meaningless nonsense. They often contain an internal pattern or insight that other characters cannot immediately follow. Netflix’s official character guide makes the same point about her difficult but purposeful language.

The comics never provide a definitive canonical explanation for why Delight became Delirium. Readers may interpret the transformation in different ways, but no single traumatic event has been confirmed as the explanation.

Delirium’s closest family bond is with Destruction. His departure affects her deeply and motivates the search for him in Brief Lives, making that story one of the best places to understand both siblings.

The family relationships that matter most

Dream and Death

Dream and Death have the most openly affectionate relationship in the original series. Death is older, more pragmatic, and more emotionally adaptable. She can puncture Dream’s self-importance without treating him as an enemy, and she repeatedly forces him to consider the human consequences of his actions.

Their closeness is familial, not romantic. Death is Dream’s sister, and Gaiman has explicitly rejected a sexual reading of their relationship.

Dream and Desire

Dream and Desire are the family’s enduring antagonists. Desire pushes at Dream’s pride and exposes his vulnerability, while Dream distrusts Desire’s willingness to manipulate people and situations. Their rivalry becomes especially dangerous because of the Endless’ prohibition against spilling family blood.

Desire and Despair

The twins are conspiratorial counterparts rather than interchangeable versions of the same emotion. Desire is active, playful, seductive, and verbally agile. Despair is withdrawn, blunt, and severe. Wanting and hopelessness can influence each other, but the story gives each sibling a distinct identity and responsibility.

Delirium and Destruction

Delirium’s love for Destruction is one of the most emotionally important sibling relationships. His disappearance is not just a plot mystery; it is a personal loss that destabilizes her. Destruction’s willingness to leave an inherited role also makes him a counterpoint to Dream, who struggles to imagine existence outside his duties.

Destiny and the family

Destiny is the most formal and detached sibling. His authority comes from his nature as Destiny—not from a stated position as patriarch or ruler. He is associated with inevitability and record-keeping rather than emotional intimacy.

Are the Endless gods?

Not exactly. The Endless occupy a more fundamental place in The Sandman’s cosmology than ordinary gods. Gods can gain or lose influence through worship, belief, cultural change, or the decline of their followers. The Endless personify the underlying forces that make experiences—and even gods—possible.

They can interact with gods, angels, demons, mortals, and other cosmic beings, but they are not simply another pantheon. Their family structure is part of the series’ central metaphor: abstract principles are given personalities, histories, responsibilities, rivalries, and emotional wounds.

  • Delight is counted separately from Delirium. They are the same sibling at different stages.
  • The earlier Despair is counted as a current sibling. The original series contains two versions, but only the later Despair belongs to the active family.
  • Night and Time are counted as siblings. They are parental figures, not additional Endless.
  • Daniel is counted as a new sibling. In the Netflix continuity, Daniel succeeds Morpheus as Dream; he is not an eighth Endless.
  • Other powerful cosmic beings are included. Gods, angels, demons, the Furies, and other personifications are part of the wider mythology but are not automatically Endless.

How Netflix’s family differs from the comics

Netflix preserves the seven-member structure of the family and introduces the previously unseen siblings during Season 2. The televised Endless are:

Endless Actor Role in the family
Destiny Adrian Lester The eldest
Death Kirby Howell-Baptiste The second-born and Dream’s older sister
Dream Tom Sturridge The third-born and lord of the Dreaming
Destruction Barry Sloane The absent Prodigal
Desire Mason Alexander Park Despair’s twin
Despair Donna Preston Desire’s twin
Delirium Esmé Creed-Miles The youngest, formerly Delight

Netflix’s The Sandman concluded with Season 2. Its two volumes premiered on July 3 and July 24, 2025, followed by a bonus episode on July 31, 2025, according to Netflix Tudum.

The adaptation also distinguishes between Morpheus and the continuing office of Dream. After Morpheus dies, Daniel becomes the new Dream of the Endless. Daniel is therefore a successor incarnation of the Dream role, not a new member of the family.

At the end of the series, Daniel meets his new siblings at a family dinner. Destruction is absent, preserving his status as the Prodigal member who has withdrawn from the family and his former responsibilities. Netflix discusses this development in its Season 2 ending explainer.

The best reading order for the Endless family mythology

If the goal is to understand the family rather than simply follow the publication order, these stories provide the most useful route:

  1. The Sandman: Season of Mists — the major early family meeting and the clearest introduction to the Endless as a group.
  2. The Sandman: Brief Lives — Dream and Delirium search for Destruction, bringing the family’s conflicts and emotional bonds to the foreground.
  3. The Sandman: Endless Nights — seven stories, with one centered on each Endless.
  4. The Sandman: Overture — a later prequel that expands the cosmology and clarifies Dream’s relationship with Night and Time.

For a first-time reader, it is better to read the original ten numbered volumes before Overture. The prequel assumes familiarity with the characters and gains much of its impact from knowledge of the main series. DC’s reading guide to entering Sandman recommends beginning with the original series and treats Overture as a separate prequel work.

Quick answers to the most common family-tree mistakes

  • Is Dream the oldest? No. Destiny is oldest, Death is second, and Dream is third.
  • Is Death Dream’s twin? No. She is his older sister.
  • Are Desire and Despair twins? Yes.
  • Is Destruction dead? No. He abandoned his role and withdrew from the family.
  • Is Delight a separate Endless? No. Delight was Delirium’s former identity.
  • Is there an eighth Endless? No current eighth sibling is established. The apparent extras come from confusing former identities, the earlier Despair, parents, or successors with active family members.
  • Is Daniel a new Endless? No. He becomes the new Dream after Morpheus.

Frequently Asked Questions

Who is Dream’s oldest sibling?

Destiny is Dream’s oldest sibling. Death is second-oldest, making her older than Dream as well.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

How many siblings does Dream have?

Dream has six siblings: Destiny, Death, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. Together, the seven siblings are known as the Endless.

Who are the twins in the Endless family?

Desire and Despair are twins. They represent different but related experiences: wanting and the loss of hope.

Why is Destruction called the Prodigal?

Destruction is called the Prodigal because he abandoned his realm and withdrew from his responsibilities centuries before the events of Brief Lives. He did not die or stop being an Endless.

Are Delight and Delirium two different characters?

No. Delirium is the youngest Endless and was formerly known as Delight. Counting both names as separate siblings incorrectly produces an eighth Endless.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Does Daniel become an eighth Endless in Netflix’s The Sandman?

No. Daniel succeeds Morpheus as Dream. He continues the office and identity of Dream rather than adding a new sibling to the family.

The Bottom Line

The Endless are a family of seven: Destiny, Death, Dream, Destruction, Desire, Despair, and Delirium. Dream is the third-born, Death is his older sister, Desire and Despair are twins, Destruction is the absent Prodigal, and Delirium is the youngest—formerly Delight. The family’s apparent eighth members are continuity misunderstandings, not additional current siblings.
